Terme of Forland London reports England presses the Boers to surrender unconditionally and to take the oath of allegiance to the king while giving up arms and ammunition. Dr. TC Robertson of Colums Via died Thursday of pneumonia. He was a Wineshore native and longtime Rock Hull resident.
The most beautiful thing in the world is the baby full of dimples and joy while the pitiful sight is the same baby now thin and in pain. The mother does not see that a little fat makes a difference as dimples fade to hollows. Special reports describe a deadly tornado sweeping Birmingham on March 25, with about 25 killed and many injured. Property losses estimated at a quarter of a million dollars, districts including Irondale Pratt City and surrounding towns heavily damaged. Severe damage also reported near Darlington and Pensacola shipping affected by a cyclone.
A mixed train derailed near Buena Vista Georgia on the Central of Georgia line. Wind lifted the engine and toppled cars onto their sides one mile east of Buena Vista seven miles from Columbus. Rescue and cleanup roots followed the accident.
A call issued by President Wilburn to South Carolina Cotton Growers urges county meetings on the first Saturday in April to discuss reducing acreage and protecting cotton prices, amid calls from Harvie Jordan and concerns over market manipulation. Special to The State reports three miles above town, Luther Jones an escaped convict was found cutting in woods with a penitentiary guard. Jones resisted with a bioaxe, was shot twice, captured after a 1.5 mile chase, and treated by Dr. Wright with serious bleeding and possible death risk. Jones had escaped from a railroad job in 187? and was convicted of Isus. The report notes American actions in the Philippines and ongoing military presence, with calls for eventual civil rule in May and continued governance.
An advertisement claims Electric Bitters will cleanse the blood and improve beauty, offering a 50 cent bottle at Crawford Brown Drug Store. In Greenwood, Mrs. Jo Ward identified Manuel Haygood as the man who allegedly attacked her. a $300 reward is offered and he is to stand trial in Atlanta. The Summer School will be held at Converse College opening June 20th.
Local ad claims Hall's Catarri sic cures all catarrh and offers a reward for proof otherwise. Endorsed by multiple manufacturers and wholesale druggists, it asserts cure through blood and mucous surface action with testimonials and price per bottle. It promotes Hat's Family Pills as best.
In Darlington on Saturday March 95 a colored man named Williamson tried to steal a ride from Bridges McKaithan’s mill on the Charleston Sumter and Northern railroad. He stood on the platform, jumped off when the conductor asked for a ticket, and, while the train ran about 35 miles per hour, died that night after being found nearby unable to speak.
