Incendiary Fire Near Greers Cripples Wood Barn

Incendiary blaze destroyed the barn of M. M. Wood near Greer's two miles away, killing 22 cattle and destroying feed, wagons, implements. Four horses were saved. A witness, Wood's son, saw a man flee the scene as flames broke out. The incident is viewed as arson.

Fertilizer shipments for February reached 87,264 tons, up from 86,735 in January, with demand dull in January and little improvement expected. Fertilizers are moving rapidly now, suggesting a potential rise in activity this month.

Fire destroys 75 bales of cotton at Mc Coll depot

In Mc Coll on March 1 a blaze consumed seventy five bales of cotton on the Atlantic Coast Line depot platform. The bales belonged to J F McLaurin H L McLaurin and the Gibson Mercantile company. Cause undetermined but likely sparked by a passing freight engine from the north.

Child dies after swallowing stick in Monck's Corner

In Monck's Corner on March 3 the six year old daughter of Mr George Murray died after swallowing a piece of stick last Saturday. A physician was summoned but could not save her. Mrs Murray, a strong believer in faith healing, telegraphed the Gospel Trumpet to pray for the child's relief.

Sentenced For Life

The court continued the State versus Petey Bind for murder in Bishopville on March 4. After closing speeches by the solicitor and defense, the jury deliberated about half an hour and returned a guilty verdict with recommendation to mercy. The judge then delivered solemn remarks on the case.

South Carolina to Receive New Battleship Name

President Roosevelt and Secretary Morton announced that one of two new battleships approved by Congress will be named South Carolina. The vessel, displacing 16,000 to 18,000 tons, is slated for about 19 knots and an estimated cost near 68 million dollars.

Elloree liquor dispensary case upheld by high court

The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled the State Board of Directors lacked authority to close the Elloree county dispensary. The justices voided the board’s December 14, 1904 resolution, granting Weeks prohibition relief to stop enforcement and restrain removal of the dispenser. The decision clarifies that closing a dispensary rests with a different tribunal and not the state board.
