J Frank Clyburn Dies by Own Hand at Elmwood Cemetery
Lancaster insurance agent J Frank Clyburn, 25, committed suicide at Elmwood cemetery early Friday. Coroner's jury cited melancholia as the likely cause after a pistol shot left him mortally wounded. The son of Col Clyburn, he had worked in furniture and insurance in Columbia and Lancaster, left a note to his mother, and was mourned by family and friends. He served as a South Carolina volunteer in the Spanish American War and was described as a devoted soldier. The inquest heard his dying words, I shot myself, and the funeral was set for the Presbyterian church in Douglass.
