The interior was smashed, liquor seized, and Chicco claims weapons were used, $182 missing, and vows to swear out warrants. Public sentiment is skeptical.
Governor McSweeney commuted Daisy Cicero a murder convict in Fairfield from death to life in prison after a strong petition from county officers and prominent citizens. Cicero, a Black woman, killed her husband, was to be hanged August 9, and had two young children at home.
An explosion of petroleum aboard the American schooner Louise Adelaide, Captain Orr, near Stockholm on July 23 caused the deaths of Captain Orr and ten crew members, four Swedish customs officials, and the Brazilian consul. Two crew members were saved as the vessel burned amid blinding flames. In separate dispatches, Seaboard Air Line machinists reach a hourly settlement in Virginia and North Carolina with job grade raises.
This afternoon at 6 in the courthouse Clerk Trim mer opened the sealed sentence against Mattie A Hughes from the last term of session court. She was convicted of running a bawdy house and faces a fine of 160 dollars or six months in the penitentiary. Her attorney P Sims appeals to the supreme court and a bond of 300 dollars was posted.
Aiken July 28 a large crowd gathered for the unveiling of the Confederate monument by the Ladies' Monument association with veterans from across the state and Augusta joining a memorial procession. The event included a barbecue, prayers by Rev A J Stafford and an unveiling address by Col B H Teague. Augusta veterans supplied a band after Charleston’s artillery band failed to appear. Flags carried included four Georgia regiments and the Cobb legion flag. Also noted are river harbor funding recommendations and political appointments. Gov Alen to be replaced by William Hunt as Puerto Rico governor.

In Greenville News from July 23, Governor McSweeney sought James A. Blackwood, an escaped Cherokee county convict, via requisition to Texas. He was arrested there but granted a pardon on condition not to return to the state. Blackwood, who stole a bale of cotton and fled the chain gang, now lives in Texas with his wife and three children.
