In Jonesville on January 25 a Black man named John Jamison tried to assault Mary Jane Young, wife of Reverend Ganewell Young, while he was away. Jamison roused the family, entered the house at night, and left after the woman raised an alarm. He has been arrested and is held in the calaboose amidst tense community mood.
Greepwood January 25. Will Hughes was killed by Maria Matthews at Isabelle Bell’s house in Troy, this county, yesterday morning. Isabelle Bell said an intruder came asking to lie down claiming someone hit him with an axe. An axe with fresh blood was found. Bell then said Martin Matthews committed the murder. he was arrested but escaped and may have fled to Georgia.
