Killing in Branchville rocks town as inquest opens

Annie Evans, a colored woman, was shot to death in Rich ard Sweat's house in Branchville. A jury convened an inquest. Sweat was arrested after a day of investigation. The gun was found in the bed between mattresses, with conflicting tales from Sweat and his wife. The victim’s daughter offered another account, and angry crowds threatened lynching Sweat, who remained alive and to be taken to Orangeburg for trial.
