Unknown man in jail for shooting constable Cooley

The Unknown man from the Santiago section of Dark Corner Glassy Mountain township was brought to jail on a warrant charging assault and battery with intent to kill Constable GL Cooley who was wounded in the back. George Howard named Harrison as the initiator of the overhead bridge fight and the shooting.

Prominent Laurens Man Aims Suicide In Carriage House

Special to The State reports AL Ballentine of Brewerton attempted self harm yesterday by hanging from a plow line in his carriage house. His wife found him unconscious as his throat, face and neck were injured. he is expected to seek treatment in Columbia. Officials cite debt stress and a demented condition as possible causes. This marks a second attempt, his children having thwarted the first.

Body of Murdered Man Found Near Wedgefield

Special to the Wedgefield depot reports a man found dead in Wateree swamp near here yesternoon. A pistol with all chambers loaded lay near the body. No inquest has been held yet. The killings occurred several days ago.

Family Tragedy in Orangeburg Lands Dispute Ends in Death

In Orangeburg a land dispute between James Jefcont and his father Ro Addison Jefcont led to violence. Ro and another son Wille shot James with a shotgun, a rifle fire followed, and James died from his wounds. An inquest was scheduled as local lawyers gather, with both families prominent in Limestone County.

Burglary at Smith Wharton Home in Greenville

A masked intruder with a Winchester rifle entered the Rev Wharton’s Greenville home at night. He demanded money and valuables, searched the pocketbook, and took items including a gold watch. The Reverend spoke calmly and complied, the burglar retreating with the rifle still aimed.

Escape attempt at Decatur jail ends with Flanagan wounded

Edward C Flanagan the triple murderer led prisoners in a jail escape at Decatur five miles from Atlanta. He felled the jailor with a heavy iron blow and was shot through the thigh when the jailer fired. Prisoners wavered but were subdued as assistance arrived. Flanagan’s wound is not dangerous.
