Near Givhans ferry seven miles south of Ridgeville, February 4, Mrs John D Bivens shot Greenberg a tow peddler who had threatened her after disturbing her home. The fatal shot occurred in her shed room after Greenberg reportedly tried to assault her. Magistrate Cummings ordered the body buried. verdict was justifiable homicide. Senator Bivens, in Columbia, was released on bond and to return for the next court term.

Veteran Dond Carder Dies in Lesslie Area at Sixty
William Carder aged sixty from the Lesslie neighborhood died Friday night of Bright's disease. He was buried Saturday in the graveyard at Bishing Creek church. He served in Company L H, 12th USV to the Confederate army and was wounded several times.

Happenings in the State Two Negroes Drowned
Bonufort February 18 two colored men Albert White and Kit Green drowned while traveling from Coo Saw Island to the Farmera mines in search of a rowboat. A separate note from Latta February 11 reports Harry Bethen, colored, digging on Mr. Manning's place unearthed two large rattlesnakes, one with nine and one with thirteen rattles. Both snakes were captured unharmed. the captor plans to sell them to a circus biased for a local performance.

Freight wreck near Ensley claims two lives on Atlanta division
At midnight a Southern Railway freight collision near Ensley killed Brakeman Gilbert of Atlanta and Fireman Rice of Spencer North Carolina. The crash derailed most cars on both trains, front sections torn into splinters. Gilbert was found under debris about eight this morning. Rice was badly mangled. Engineers Corzine Lemmon and Harris survived with bruises and injuries.
