Senator John L. McLaurin of South Carolina reflects on plans after March 4. A Raleigh observer questions whether he will return to Palmetto state life or seek opportunities in the East, but McLaurin says he has not made up his mind and remains attached to his state.

Governor Heyward refused clemency for Richland Tallman convicted in Newberry for murder in 1900 with mercy recommendation and life in prison. He also denied mercy for Arthur Goodhall in Bamberg for manslaughter, four years. Charles M. Jaggers in Chester for assault with intent to kill and concealed weapons, four years. judge urged clemency and exile. Winter coughs warning and Foley's Honey mentioned.
Bamberg County Times notes the attorney general’s report showing 223 homicides in 1902. It laments rising state lawlessness and urges harsher enforcement, arguing that people must face consequences to deter killings and protect life.
John Frith, a North Carolina man and partner with Witten Height in Webb, near Eckman, Va., shot and killed Height and Frank Williams at Eckman, West Virginia. Height had accused Frith of an affair, Frith then killed Height, Williams, and wounded a bystander while fleeing to the mountains. Frith remains at large.

Snow drifts hinder Northern Pacific trains near Lara mie and in Dillon snow lies 20 feet deep, with travel taking days over mountain routes.
New York on February 13 William Hooper Young was taken to Sing Sing for a life sentence for the murder of Mrs Anna Pulitzer. He resisted removal from the prison van, was dragged through Grand Central, clothes torn and hat broken, then calmed after boarding the train and arriving at the penitentiary. He walked from the station to the prison in a crowd of onlookers.
A freight train struck a large boulder on the Baltimore and Ohio track near Vienna station west of Washington Pennsylvania. The wreck left the tracks torn up for hundreds of feet and blocked traffic east and west. Three B&O employees were killed in the disaster.
