A town watchman encounters a band of bank robbers near the Lancaster Mercantile Company and opens fire. One assailant is wounded and later captured, while the others flee. The incident highlights vigilant local policing and ongoing pursuit by authorities.
The Gap National Bank in Gap, Pa., was attacked early this morning by three or four men who blew a rear vault plate with dynamite. Watchman David Stamix fired on the burglars, wounding at least one as they fled. One bandit, wounded in the face, was treated in Lancaster after being treated at Atglen and Parksburg.
Special to The State reports a heated exchange on Main Street in Newberry, February 8, between editors Wallace and J E H Aull of The Merald and News. Wallace sustained heavy bruising while Aull suffered minor scratches in a physical confrontation sparked by an editorial in the Newberry Tautalon.
