George H. Northam reports four field trials on preventing wheat smut using brining lime washing and Peruvian guano. Lot 1 without brine or lime yielded 13 bushels with severe smut. Lot 2 brined and limed with 150 pounds guano yielded 15 bushels with little smut. Lot 3 limed only yielded 10 bushels with about one third smut. Lot 4 washed in spring water then limed with 150 pounds guano yielded 18 bushels with no smut. Growth was vigorous across all lots.
