Happenings In The State reports widespread crop issues in Blacksburg with bull rot in cotton and caterpillar activity blamed on wet weather. Chester notes a fatal shooting after an incident between two men near Lowryville. Wynne covers eleven prominent white farmers arrested for whitecapping in Poinsett County, with sawmill laborers fleeing under threats.
An advertisement touts Electric Bitters as a preventive for death by own action describing it as a tonic and nervine that strengthens nerves and regulates the stomach liver and kidneys. It promises 50 cent price and lists Crawford Bros J F Mackey Funderburk Pharmacy as sellers. In Spartanburg county a young black man, about 20, was found dead in a field near Athwright mills with a fatal head wound, suggesting murder and robbery.
Aug 21 report says Lee Green, 15, alleged murderer of Zurasky the Jew peddler from Augusta, was captured at his father’s Hawthorn farm after a local vigil. Witnesses describe a confrontation in which Green shot Zurasky multiple times then used an axe to finish him before hiding the body.
Aug 20 Malifax NC Mary Jenkins 18 found dead in Capt Griffin stable with throat cut and body in a bag. Suspect Munna Ponton, a hotel worker, held with keys, blood on hands. Crowds armed from Welldon overran town. he was hanged then shot. Confessed to murder and assault. Disorder ends as mob disperses.
Dr. P Eugene Funderburk of Smiths Grove Kentucky recounts relief after three bottles of Foley's Kidney Cure for kidney and bladder trouble and enlarged prostrate gland. He prescribes it in his practice and urges other physicians to use it in hundreds of cases with success. The Chicago News quotes a police magistrate urging a confession in a separate exchange.
Gus Atkins alias Murray, John Atkins and John Rice, wanted in Madison county North Carolina for the June 4 1902 murder of James Ries, were arrested at Thacker Mago county West Virginia by Welch officers. John Atkins resisted arrest and was wounded in the hip by Chief Day. The trio await extradition while others in the escape plot were recaptured. A 400 reward had been offered.
Senator Tillman attended a Lexington barbecue hosted by PCUG Record and spoke on national politics. He did not deny or explain his use of railroad passes, arguing it was a political attack by enemies and newspapers. Congressman Lever and Senator Latimer defended or opposed the good roads plan, drawing mixed applause from a large attentive crowd.
London reports the death of Lord Salsbury at 6:05 tonight after a 48 hour decline. The renowned statesman, once premier of England, lasted with the aid of oxygen as his condition worsened.
