Tragedy Near Blacksburg Ends in Headlong River Rescue
In a bridge disaster near Blacksburg a northbound freight crossing failed as the timber span collapsed. Engineer J Metcalf disappeared with his engine, while fireman Fred Rhyne was rescued after a perilous drift in icy waters. Metcalf’s body was recovered later, leaving a widow and two small children.
