Special to The State reports James W Tolbert, husband of the McCormick postmaster, was chased from his home by masked men and driven from the town. He fled via the back door, sought protection, and was later arrested for carrying concealed weapons as authorities sought to keep him away from McCormick.
In Washington and New York reports say a plan to launch a Dewey candidacy emerged to counter rivals among eastern Democrats. The World publishes an Admiral Dewey interview saying he is willing to run if the people wish it, but he declines to state a party or platform.

Petroleum output reached 185,000,000 gallons in 1890 and 2,325,000,000 in 1898. Steel output increased from 68,750 tons in 1870 to 8,939,857 in 1898. Exports of iron and steel products rose from 11,002,902 in 1870 to 93,716,031 in 1898.
Gen Otis reports since January 1 insurgents and ladrone losses total 1,426 killed and 1,453 captured, with 3,051 small arms and 165 artillery pieces seized. U.S. casualties include 3 officers and 78 enlisted men killed and 19 officers and 151 enlisted men wounded as skirmishes total 124.
