Tragedy Strikes Waterloo Woman Lizzie Madden Suicide

Waterloo mourns as 22 year old Lizzie Madden dies by her own hand after a fall illness turned to consumption. The tragedy follows multiple family losses to disease as her brother discovers her in apparent suicide with a pistol, in a chair, near a gun. Miss Madden was active in the Waterloo Baptist Church and its societies.

Two Tigers Caught in Yorkville

In Yorkville on March 31 a blind tigers trial before Mayor Willis led to three colored men from Main Street barber shop being charged with liquor sales. Smith and Adams pleaded guilty to three counts each and were fined or sentenced to six days on the chain gang. Herndon was acquitted after a jury demand. Several cases remain pending against them.

Negro Butler's Shocking Crime In Philadelphia Home

William H. Lane, a 26 year old colored butler, killed his employer Mrs Ella J Furbush and her daughters Madeline and Eloise in their Philadelphia home. Lane fled but was captured hours later in Camden New Jersey and confessed. He planned to murder the family and rob the house.

Cotton Fire Destroys Yorkville Spinning Plant and Cotton

The Victor Orton Oil Company spinning plant in Yorkville was destroyed by fire along with thirty two bales of cotton. Loss estimated at $2,500 with $600 insurance on the plant. Fire began about 7 30 and is believed to have been caused by a match as machinery was operating.

Nearest lynching scare rocks Chesterfield county

Cheraw March 31. Will Brewer who killed Mr. Maen at Hornsboro in January was captured in Nashville Ga and brought back for trial. A mob of 60 to 70 men tried to seize him from jail causing Sheriff Douglass to threaten to fire. They withdrew with no bloodshed. Brewer to face trial as term of court opens tomorrow for two weeks.

Edgefield Farmer Killed in Carlotina Robbery Near Augusta

W L Collins a farmer from Edgefield county South Carolina was assassinated by negro highwaymen five miles from Augusta, Georgia, in Carolina this afternoon. George Woods, driving with Collins, resisted the hold up. the assailants fired, killing Collins and wounding Woods, then escaped.
