The Senate rejected the President's plea to ratify eight arbitration treaties with European governments, amending them to fit Senate prerogatives. Only nine votes favored acceding to the President’s wishes, amid ongoing Senate protests including objections from southern senators. The amended treaties require the President's assent with Senate approval for such matters.
Mr and Mrs Gilbert McClurg book sixty lectures in sixty days across six states under the Colorado State Realty Association. Their transcontinental tour features The Empire of Peak Pass and Plain, aims to attract Epworth League delegates to Colorado next July, and includes venues in Chicago Milwaukee Minneapolis St. Paul Detroit Omaha Kansas City Des Moines Atchison Madison Grand Rapids Indianapolis and other cities. Portland Oregon February 12 Judge A H Tanner a partner of United States Senator Mitchell confessed in Judge Bellingers court to perjury before the federal grand jury in the land fraud probe. He said there was a business arrangement giving Mitchell the law firm profits in federal courts and Tanner those from government departments. He pledged to testify fully against Mitchell.
Kansas residents rally against Standard Oil after shut down of operations. Chanute oil producers invite Thomas W. Lawson and Pure Oil to aid refinery efforts in Kansas and urge united support for crude refining and bi products. The Chanute district denounces the blacklist as an attempt to panic the oil fields and sway lawmakers.
The Interior Department temporarily withdraws from disposal 230000 acres in Bozeman Montana and 345000 acres in Carson City Nevada due to the Madison river and Truckee Carson irrigation projects. Senate members propose a leprosarium bill and actions on Indian lands and rail rebates are outlined.
President Roosevelt will not present the general arbitration treaties in their Senate amended form to the negotiating countries. Secretary Hay says the Senate action renders the treaties a step backward and the President cannot submit them in altered form. The Senate approved an amendment 50 to 9, with several paired votes and misrecorded names noted. The treaties were sent to the White House and will be logged and handed to the State Department.
United States Civil Service Commission announces exams in the federal building on March 15 for positions including acting assistant surgeon draftsman engineer immigrant inspector kindergarten teacher law clerk matron meat inspector physician and translator. Applications must be mailed from Denver to Washington by March 1 1905.
