Dunbar of the Kennewick Private Creamery Co. leaves on a weeklong central Oregon buying trip. He aims to purchase four more carloads of dairy cows to be distributed among patrons, with two roads sold to farmers in the Kennewick valley district. Shipment arrival expected around October.
Dairying in the valley expands as farmers buy on an easy payment plan. The creamery company reports success and hopes to continue shipping cows while demand remains strong.
At the county commissioners meeting E L Baxter of this city was named superintendent of maintenance on the Inland Empire highway through Benton county on the highway department recommendation. Baxter has served as road supervisor in the district for years and will be succeeded locally by C E Duffy.
Mr and Mrs John B Haydon marked fifty years of marriage with their living children present in Kennewick. The couple wed in Salem Oregon on October 4 1871 and are longtime Northwest pioneers now residing at the Second Street home of their son Guy J Haydon. They moved to Kennewick from Farmington twelve years ago and Mr Haydon has served on the city police force for most of their residence.
The Kennewick flour mill, purchased by M. O. Klitten and associates, resumes operations as Kennewick Flour Mills company. Officers are M. O. Klitten president G. Garber vice president and C. B. Shoemaker secretary treasurer and manager. J. B. Conroy joins as salesman. The mill will continue producing Washington Hard Wheat and Kennewick Best flour.
The Woman's club opens its year with a Friday October 14 meeting at the Congregational church parlors. Members should attend for a business session and president's federation report, plus a social hour, art prints exhibit, and a short lecture on American art. Light refreshments served. program starts 2:30 PM.
County Game Warden Brown vows strict game laws enforcement. He confiscated shotguns from three poachers during opening duck days and plans auctions to fund the state game fund. Hunters report fair success with a 50 duck and 3 goose haul at the Russell ranch near Richland. pheasant season opens in Walla Walla, with Benton opening October 30.
Mr and Mrs Hal Cole drove from Toppenish to spend Sunday with Dr and Mrs B L Cole. Miss Edith Cole of Walla Walla was also a weekend guest.
The Grange store has moved into the Klitten building at Pacific and Front, gaining larger quarters for more merchandise and limited commercial storage. Manager C C Day says space allows apples potatoes and other farm crops to be reserved. a corner room is being remodeled into a ladies rest room maintained by the local granges.
Benton County Commissioner R. E. Pratt won the first round in his libel suit against the Benton County recall committee after Superior Judge John Truax overruled a demurrer. The judge held that the recall committee acts are privileged but not absolute, requiring the defendants to answer the complaint seeking 25000 dollars. Defendants include E. W. R. Taylor Prosser H. E. Robinson White Bluffs C. E. Briggs Hanford and A. E. Whan Benton City. Pratt alleges the recall effort is motivated by personal prejudice rather than public welfare. He and his attorneys are Molton & Jeffrey and Williamson & Luhman. defendants are H J Snively.
The City Lray Line relocates its offices to the Emigh building opposite its former site. It will occupy the whole building and add storage services alongside draying and transfers.
The Church Mfg Co awaits two special tank cars to ship 15 000 gallons of Kennewick cider to a Chicago vinegar maker. The cider, unsold as a beverage, is offered at a very low price. After finishing the grape run, the plant presses apples but expects output to drop due to slow demand and a limited market.
A full page in the Courier-Reporter urges attendance at Sunday school as part of the Go to Sunday School movement. Local merchants sponsor the page, arranged by Rev. E. I. Mitchell of the Christian church who plans to reuse the format with new copy in coming weeks.
Commissioner R E Pratt states the annual county budget allows a small decrease in the county tax levy to about 10 mills, roughly two mills below 1921. Officials see continued activities but at reduced costs, with many estimates pruned to the limit and some departments warning of insufficient funds. A committee led by ex Commissioner Houston urged sweeping cuts including abolishing the county agricultural agent, a move the Prosser Community club did not endorse.
The Commercial club votes not to exhibit in Seattle next month at the Northwest Fruit Exposition. A luncheon meeting cites lateness to collect fruit and the need to fund more important projects as reasons for passing up the display.
After a two month suspension The Produce Company News resumes as a back page feature in The Courier-Report or with half its former size. Editor W O Price aims to keep it as readable and engaging as before within limited space.
Mr and Mrs R C Stack and family depart Monday to establish residence in Walla Walla and begin their new home.
Kennewick Irrigation District directors see a chance that the U S government will start Kennewick high line construction as an unemployment relief measure. Telegrams from Congressman Summers Blaine and Seattle Chamber of Commerce urge details on timing and funds. Spokane Chamber of Commerce also offers support as local groups press for rapid action and publicity.
Professor Leonard Hegnaver Extension Specialist in Soils and Crops Washington State College will visit individual corn plots belonging to Corn Club boys on October 6 7 and 8 to instruct seed corn selection from the field and proper storage for winter.
Mrs. M M Moulton and Mrs. E M Sly with son Gene motored to Walla Walla for a trip today.
Miss Mona Young of this city won the carnival queen contest with over 14000 votes and received a diamond ring. Richland’s Miss Evelyn Yedica finished second with 10000 votes while Bernice Mears, tied early leader, could not compete late due to illness. The American Legion praised the results as the post benefited about 300 dollars from the week’s effort.
