Cairo reports the surrender of 38 000 Italian troops in Ethiopia under Duke of Aosta in the Alagi fortress, ending Mussolini’s Eastern Africa empire dream. In Libya further heavy fighting rages as German reinforced Italians clash with British forces across the border into Egypt.
Italy annexes Crotia as a puppet state under the Duke of Spoleto, nephew of the King of Italy. Croatia loses arms independence as Italy acquires the Dalmatian coast and key Adriatic ports in the breakup of Yugoslavia.
More than 200 aliens, largely Greeks and Italians, have been rounded up here and in other centers by Immigration Service operatives ordered to detain all in the country illegally. Attorney General Jackson urged scrutiny of tourists and recent arrivals of uncertain antecedents in a radio address.

Pacific Power & Light filed a new power service schedule effective May 22 to cut rates for manufacturing and industrial users consuming 30 kilowatts. The company expects about $70,000 yearly savings in Oregon and Washington, while earlier announced reductions will save residential, commercial, and farm customers about $410,000 across the two states.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Nicoson and Mr and Mrs John Owens with families were Sunday dinner guests at the A R McCamish home. Later they visited the Chuck Neel ranch in the Hills.
The Mills family near Hover operates a forty-foot-deep, tree filled 15 acre farm concentrating on diverse fruit crops and supplementary ground crops. They cultivate multiple peach varieties, cherries, prunes and add asparagus, alfalfa and raspberries. Livestock includes cows sheep hogs and chickens. They emphasize balanced production with irrigation and climate advantages supporting a self sufficient household supply.
The Sears Roebuck contest sponsored purebred Chester White gifts for seventeen Central Washington FFA chapters. Calvin Liebel Ira Lampson and Beverley Sanders won pigs. Ray Schwartz and Richard Foraker received Duroc Jersey gifts. Winners return first litter offspring to their chapters.
County treasurer Ray Gilcrest resigned last Friday with resignation effective this weekend. He will join Bonneville Power Administration and be stationed at Walla Walla. Elected treasurer in 1938, he previously served as chief deputy under Ben Knox for four years.
After the Founders Day banquet at the Seattle Press Club last Friday night, E. B. Fussell of the Seattle PI John Forner publisher of the Kent weekly R. E. Reed local publisher were made honorary initiates of Sigma Delta Chi. Seven journalism students at the University were also inducted. Sigma Delta Chi honors journalism achievement.
Mr and Mrs F J Arnold announce the engagement of their daughter to a local young man. The couple plan a future wedding after recent spring announcements.
Dry land wheat farmers will be guests of the Kiowa-Benton community club at the regular meeting next Monday evening the 26th. The program begins at 8 with two out of town speakers and a sound technicolor film on Men Who Grow Wheat.
Commencement exercises at the auditorium Wednesday evening marked the graduation of 65 juniors into the senior class the fifth such graduation since the junior high schools began. The program featured Tracy Murphy on violin, Naomi Foraker at piano, and the address by M Moulton. J A Mayer presented diplomas as Principal Edgar Gilbert introduced the class.
WPA sponsored supervised play program for youngsters runs in Kennewick Park from Monday to Friday. Activities include games crafts and instruction with two daily sessions from 10 to 12 and 1 to 4. Children will be safe cared for and supervised throughout the week.
Griggs store already installed in the Havstad building. The firm handles electrical equipment, electrical contracting, and refrigeration. A formal opening is planned for a later date.
A group of Spokane businessmen will be guests of Kennewick tomorrow morning for about half an hour. The Spokane men are expected to discuss regional commerce and potential cooperation with local officials.
A special bond election in the port district drew about six hundred voters with over ten to one in favor of a $24,000 bond to fund a development plan. Plans include a spur track to dock property, a bulk grain conveyor system, and a no cost loading elevator. warehouses may follow with other companies. Results: precincts mostly approved, total 533 in favor, 33 against, two invalid, meeting the fifty percent turnout requirement.
The Junior-Senior Banquet was held in the Cafeteria on Friday May 16 with over a hundred attendees. The Navy theme featured shipyard decorations and a program including Invocation by Rev M Rauth Toastmaster Hal Keene Welcome Roy Zahn and a vocal trio performing An Chor Aweigh and We Joined the Think of the Seniors.
L. B. Ringer of Benton City was arrested this week at the Richland area on a fishing related charge. Authorities provided few details but indicated the case is under review by county law enforcement.
