Mayor Pratt dismissed Chief M H Kershaw and appointed Ward Rupp as temporary police head and Mersell Fisher as temporary Patrolman in charge of parking meters. Kershaw left office yesterday and may appeal. Rupp pledged to maintain order with Sheriff Deputies and State Patrolmen while a permanent chief is sought.
Local residents jubilant as the Kennewick Highlands irrigation project wins House approval led by Congressman Hal Holmes. The vote was unanimous after a rules committee push and follows decades of effort. Senate companion bill expected to pass with little opposition. next steps include Cain’s sponsorship in the Senate.
The evening Toastmistresses group gathers Friday at 8 o clock at Mrs. Michael Schuster's home 9 Third Avenue East. Mrs. Lance Read is named co host. All members are urged to attend.

Activians in Kennewick report that 60 percent of cancer fund collection cans disappeared from city store counters over the past days. Only $103 remained in remaining cans. A $25 reward offer was matched by Robert Matheson to aid arrest and conviction. Activians urge handling future collections by means other than loose cans on counters.
Walter Leon Evans, 52, is confirmed as the sole fatality of the Kennewick Hotel blaze. Evans, a Richland boilermaker, died of smoke suffocation after attempting to escape. Funeral plans await Evans’ sister and son from Baton Rouge and his ex wife Sue Evans from Grandview. Fire crews continue wreckage work to determine the fire’s origin. State funds totaling 25 000 are allocated to Benton Franklin District Health for additional staff pending county commissioner actions.
The first combined May Day and Recreation Day in Kennewick, organized by the Kennewick schools and Recreation Commission, drew strong turnout and favorable remarks from Recreation Chairman Al Cheney. Baton sales raised 709 dollars with 351.45 to be shared by youth groups and schools. remaining funds to cover bills. May Queen Flossie Smith and Crown Princess Joan Howard led the parade with sponsors from Camp Fire Girls and several school groups.
Congressman W Sterling Cole cites a first hand check of housing and sanitation in Kennewick as evidence to press the Atomic Energy Commission for prompt action. He sends a letter to AEC head David Lilienthal detailing the visit and urging relief.
The Richland Players bring The Man Who Came to Dinner to Kennewick High School auditorium for Friday and Saturday shows as a Cancer Fund benefit. Cast of 32 plus director Michael Clark promise a stronger Kennewick performance, with advance tickets at local shops and Courier office.

The Church Women council for the Kennewick Pasco area schedules a May Fellowship luncheon on Friday May 7 at 1 pm at the Pasco Recreation Center. Pasco Christian church women will serve. Mrs Kennewick Bell is set as speaker. Officers for the next year will be elected. Luncheon reservations are available from Mrs P J Luvaas Mrs H A Seltzer Mrs Eugene Hawkins or Mrs J N Tinsley.
The firms Futter Merrick and Merrick and Horrigan Leavy filed two civil suits seeking to restrain use of the Pioneer Iron Works name and alleging property damages at Front Street site owned by Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Thompson. Sheriff papers covering the first count were mailed Tuesday. a second count was expected to be served Wednesday.
