Frank L Trimble is hospitalized in Pasco after a highway wreck when he reportedly swallowed strychnine. He was thrown from a car that rolled onto its top near midnight while speeding home. A Pasco physician treats him as police verify the suicide attempt and bottle contents.
Consolidated Freight Lines completed the purchase of the Edwards Fyfe Concrete factory building to remodel it as district headquarters. The Kennewick site will feature new loading entrances and storage space, supporting the company’s 4000 mile territory and 150 trucks.
Camp Fire Girls mark the 23rd anniversary of the movement with events across Shewa and Hashatuaya groups. The program includes a ceremonial gown appearance at a Council Fire service on Friday March 15 at the Methodist church, an all day outing Saturday at Wallula Gap, a special sermon Sunday March 17, and an anniversary banquet Monday March 18 at the church.
Treasurer Ben Knox announces a three percent rebate for prompt payment of personal property tax. Delinquency date extended to May 31 this year. Citizens urged to pay before Friday March 15 to receive the rebate.
The Christmas Seal Sale in Benton County, best since 1931, reports receipts of 402.87 in 1933 and 1934 with 67 percent distributed in Benton County and 33 percent to state and national efforts. The Tuberculosis League notes funds support education and prevention, not full cures, and thanks local clubs, editors, teachers, ministers, and donors for support and stamp production.
A good sized crowd attended the all class play Fixing It for Fa ther at the Liberty theatre last night. Miss Virginia Carpenter as the old maid drew the biggest hit, with John Tweet as the Professor and Mary Thresher as a daughter close behind. Edwin Neuman played organ selections and the cast showed strong direction throughout.
The Kennewick Sportsman's club offers many prizes in a predatory game contest open to Benton and Franklin residents. About forty prizes, including two .22 rifles and 500 rounds, plus groceries, meals, sporting goods, and various trades, are donated by local businesses with receiving stations at Plowman's and Washington Hardware.
James McGee and Loyal Smith, Whitman college students, present The Whitman Magicians a sleight of hand show at the Methodist church basement on Friday night March 8. They will sample their act Friday afternoon driving a car up Main Street while blindfolded, drawing on years of audience delight. Epworth League sponsors the event.
The church's general aid group hosted its monthly chicken noodle luncheon at the church on Wednesday, drawing a solid turnout from parishioners and neighbors seeking a meal and fellowship.
Mayor Alfred Amon resigned as vice president and W S Green resigned as a board member. E S McDonald had quit earlier amid reorganization plans. The stockholders meeting was postponed to April first to fill vacancies with George Anderson tentatively chosen. Grass tonnage and asparagus operations face agency delays as managers are sought.
Inspector Paul Bentley visits the city and investigates a mail pouch theft at Burbank Tuesday night discovering a rifled pouch and locating a suspect.
Mrs. Joe Martin hosted the Silver club gathering on Wednesday with pinochle played. Honors went to Mrs Albert Campbell and low score to Mrs Carl Kistler. Guests from Pasco included Mrs C A Radditz Mrs Jack Fall and Mrs Kitzler.
Mrs H W Whittemore hosted a Wednesday dessert luncheon for the Rinkydinks. The group will hold its next meeting with Mrs V M Bird.
Joint meeting of Kennewick and Pasco Boy Scout councils schedules leadership training for fathers on March 13 14 27 28 and April 10 11 in Kennewick. Robert H Hayes from Walla Walla leads as scoutmaster with participating fathers earning the same advancement tests as scouts. The free course ends with an overnight hike and certificates are awarded as ranks are earned.
A second batch of 20 wheat checks totaling 4067.80 is received by Harry Forsyth, treasurer of the Benton County Wheat Production Control Association, completing the first shipment and covering the initial 1934 payment.
J H Gravensland, an early local photographer now working in Woodland, returned to his Woodland home the first of the week after visiting son Wilmot Gravensland and family. He is overseeing property he still owns.
Miss Gladys Speegle received a box of daffodils from Mr and Mrs E C Durdle on Monday. The flowers came from a bulb farm Mr Durdle supports in Nahcotta. Durdle formerly Benton county extension agent and now works similarly in Clark county.
Pasco chamber of commerce and Kiwamis club plan a community celebration at the fair grounds to honor new settlers in the three rivers area. Ten steers will be roasted as the main feature. Estimated cost about 1400 dollars, with local businessmen hesitant to fund the event now. A welcome gesture is planned for some 891 new settlers across irrigated projects, inviting Kennewick participation.
Three Whitman College artists will be presented by the Pasco Orphon club at the Kennewick Methodist church on Sunday afternoon. Miss Alice Peterson and Miss Elizabeth Bienfong will perform a two piano concert praised by Pendleton and Walla Walla audiences. Mrs. El nora Campbell Maxey, soprano, assists with Variations in E Flat Minor by Sinding and other pieces including Chinese Impressions and Romeo and Juliet Overture by Tschaikowsky. A silver offering will be collected.
Bonus offers spur a surge in ballots as Kennewick district contestants vie for an all expense paid California trip. Votes are counted through Saturday with final results to be announced in the paper. top contenders include Miss June Visger and Miss Verdella Mueller among others, with judges verifying tallies.
The glee clubs under Catherine Miller perform The Belle of Barcelona a lively Span ish musical comedy at the local theatre on March 20. Eighty performers take the stage with dancing choruses sailor drills and an engaging plot featuring Martha Chellis Charles Peter Marcia Vincent Wilson Talbott Everett Clifford Verne Foraker Lowell Higley Lorene Belair Marian Glen-Soak Athol Jones Peggy Burton Wayne Smalley and others.
