Clark Bros. and Klein of Spokane plan extensive drilling northwest of Kennewick near the Rattlesnake Hills after securing an option on 11,000 acres around a gas‑venting well. The field near the well is to be explored for oil and natural gas possibilities as work proceeds.
A Spokane company led by Dr. G S Allison struck artesian gas at 500 feet but halted at 750 feet. The well mouth was plugged then relit, burning for months as a torch twenty to thirty feet high. Clark Bros and Klein inspected lands around the well, with H A Slee and others joining from Spokane. (Continued on Page 8)
Fourth of July preparations in Kennewick include a busy schedule with a band led by F. L. Young, Kennewick Woman's Club rest rooms, an open-air dancing pavilion at Yakima and Third streets, refreshment stands, and multiple events. Highlights include baseball parades, Richland versus Finley, nozz le races, pie eating, fireworks, and a late band concert.
Charles Rasmussen, a bartender at Hoffman and Harding's saloon in Prosser, was shot and killed Tuesday night. Peter Brickey, a laborer, went to the saloon with two companions, then stepped behind the bar and opened fire.
Lee M Lampson returns to Kennewick headquarters after two weeks tending the fire blight battle around Prosser. He praises progress under Inspector Luke Powell and urges continual vigilant cutting of blight to protect local orchards from the costly disease.
J D Ross Seattle municipal lighting boss testified at North Yakima hearing that one large central plant at Kennewick could supply 25 to 30 towns along the Pacific Power and Light line at lower cost. He argued water rights have no rate basis and favored coal or oil to replace hydro at Kennewick, predicting 15 percent annual savings.
Kennewick officials announced another record for early fruit shipments this week as the Fruit Exchange reported four boxes of thoroughly ripened pears raised by Lewis Larson in the Garden Tracts. The same day the association began with the first apricots of the season.
The fourth annual Columbia River Valley Grape Carnival begins fundraising with H. J. Claussen E. W. Trenbath and G. A. Kjosness steering the subscription list. Local businessmen are urged to back a 1500 dollar guarantee fund for the event scheduled September 17 18 and 19.
R L Banta of Garden Tracts reports $1200 receipts from two acres of Bing Royal Ann and Lambert cherries harvested in year three. He contracted at $1 per 10 pound box but sold extra crates at better price, netting about $850 after $350 costs. Harvest spanned June 1 to June 16 with full payment June 25.
President Wilson announced the nomination of Miss Eleanor Staser to succeed Postmaster Arthur H. Wheaton. The senate is expected to confirm the appointment within days so the change can take effect July 1.
The Yakimine shipment from Yakima by the association arrived yesterday in five four basket crates. Grower Geo. D. Peters cultivated the fruit on the highlands and critics call the Yakimine the finest seen. Each Yak was perfectly colored and attractive. A basket holds two dozen Yaks.
