Dr Ripley county health officer told Kiwanis members there is no imminent milk famine in Kennewick despite reduced dairy cows and a new milk grading ordinance. He noted local suppliers come from outside areas and that labor costs, not local rules, hurt small dairies.
Washington State Patrol enforces removal of unauthorized car stickers to keep windshields clear. Only four stickers are legal: a high denomination gasoline ration sticker in the lower rear window, the 1942 license plate sticker in the lower left windshield, a tax stamp in the lower right, and a military post or war plant identifier in the lower center windshield. Officers will stop cars with extra stickers to ensure compliance.
Harrsch Now Sergeant Chr Harold Harrsch, son of Mrs Min tie B, at McChord Field. He has been promoted to sergeant in the Army Air Forces.
Five girls from Wenatchee with mother advisor Mrs How ard Whitbeck attended the 17th annual Rainbow for Girls assembly in Washington and Alaska. Verdine Foraker was named grand chaplain for the coming year as Alaska participants joined the Victory session. The group traveled four days and returned midweek.
Senator Stinson told the Kennewick chamber of commerce that area roads must be demanded now. He cited weak state road replies and said war department cooperation would follow a required road. He highlighted links to Seattle, the Sound area, Portland, and river road prospects amid winter conditions.
The Christian Sunday school children present a day program during the church service next Sunday June 27. A foreign missions collection will be taken. After the program a park picnic follows for all Sunday School members with each person bringing a lunch. Lunch served by a committee.
Joe Martin sells his Kennewick barber shop after thirty years to Mr. and Mrs. E B Armstrong of Oregon. Both are expert barbers and will work in the shop. The move marks Kennewick’s first female barber experience, with patrons showing a positive reception. Martin will retire from active business life but plans to remain a Kennewick resident.
Kennewick youth Chris Neil Erickson aged 17 has joined the Navy as an apprentice seaman after enlisting at Walla Walla and being sworn in at Spokane on June 12. He heads to Farragut Idaho for indoctrination. He is Washtucna High School graduate and former football star and boxing competitor.
Olive Brue wed Olav I. Otheim owner of the Western Auto Supply store in a double ring ceremony at the English Lutheran church. The bride wore a navy middy gown with a fingertip veil and carried a pink and white rose bouquet. The couple, both local residents and community figures, plan a life together as he runs the Kennewick shop and she works at the Twin City Creamery while both are tied to local pioneer roots.
The government feed wheat program is on again for a limited time after a recent cancellation due to past allocation being sold. The AAA committee hopes to arrange substantial supplies for Benton county feeders and will release details as arrangements are completed.
The notice lists ration stamp expirations across categories. COFFEE and MEATS AND FATS expire June 30, with Blue PROCESSED FOODS expiring July 7. SUGAR expires August 15 for stamp 13, while CANNING SUGAR and TIRE INSPECTION deadlines follow later dates. Bears and C cars must be inspected before specified seasonal deadlines.
Cascade Frozen Foods, Inc. begins a large scale quick freezing operation at its Kennewick plant handling over a thousand tons of peas. Lynn Wadsworth, ex Walla Walla Canning Kennewick plant superintendent, leads the operation. The Burlington plant will also quick freeze a reduced strawberry tonnage, 40 percent of 1942 levels, due to reduced acreage and labor. Fred Delwo joins the production staff. Total packout expected to exceed 30 percent over 1942.
Dr. Wetherall outlined a new medical unit for the region. He detailed preventive measures social work and industrial accident facilities. The program includes health care at nominal costs full pay for illness up to ninety days for long time workers and modern hospital services from childbirth to elephantiasis.
Sgt. Wilbur E. Wiegand of Kennewick has graduated from the flexible gunnery school at Ft. Myers Florida and is now qualified as an aerial gunner. He will join bomber crews for overseas service and will train at an operational field in the United States. Wiegand, in the Army seven months, was a carpenter in civilian life.
Farm machinery rationing officials announce that garden tractors will be moved to state level quotas while only nine items stay under county control. County purchase certificates remain required and allocations depend on demonstrated need and certificate of availability. The nine items include power dusters, combines, potato diggers, side delivery rakes, hay loaders, pick up balers, potato sorters and graders, and wheel type tractors on steel or rubber wheels.
Chambers hear residents and workers from Reconsignment point and DuPont project complain that stores close before they finish shifts. Proposal urged for at least one late evening open day, 8 or 9 oclock, to aid those with occupational hours. Pasco merchants face the same issue and joint retailers seek a solution.
The WPB via the Benton county US DA war board announced Priorities Regulation 19 allows farmers to buy up to 25 dollars worth of any of 144 listed items by filing a signed farmer certification with the dealer. Purchases over 25 dollars require local county farm rationing committee approval.
