Excitement runs high as the Courier-Reporter subscription drive nears its 9 p m Saturday deadline, with five bicycle prizes for boy and girl candidates in the paper's service area. A sealed ballot box ensures fairness, results to be announced Sunday morning with winners posting on the office window and prize bicycles to be awarded Sunday.
East Kennewick voters are urged to back Albert Belter a popular well liked candidate described as a hard worker. The piece notes his campaign and hints supporters may be rewarded with a new bicycle for the district if he wins and rides through town.
Kennewick kicks off its July celebration with a benefit dance Friday June 24 to launch Dress Up Week. Loud shirts and five gallon cowboy hats become compulsory attire for citizens, a popular advertising feature inviting ladies to join the event.
County Agent Skuse calls an educational meeting in Kennewick at 7 30 p m on June 10 to discuss a federal marketing agreement for late potatoes before a state hearing in Ellensburg June 20. Farmers will submit evidence to AAA representatives and vote on the measure. The plan aims to regulate shipments based on surplus while exempting No 1 potatoes and allowing producer exemptions as needed. Extension from State College of Washington will be present.
The Yakima Valley expects no less than 750 cars of cherries if weather and markets permit, with California and Oregon supplies overlapping. Eastern buyers’ reduced purchasing power and a 5 percent rise in freight rates cloud the outlook, while Pasco and Kennewick Bing shipments begin early.
Fire early this morning destroyed the boiler house at the Twin City Live Stock and Poultry Co. plant near the N. P. bridge at the eastern city limits. Fire department controlled the blaze and prevented spread to adjacent buildings. damage extent is not yet determined.
Associated Women Pilots of the Northwest will hold their annual convention in Kennewick on June 18. Between 25 and 30 women pilots are expected, with eight to ten planes joining the trip. Attendees will travel from Boise and far western air ports such as Seattle Portland Tacoma and Olympia. Officers will be elected, and a banquet will cap the business session with several local citizens invited.
Kennewick will assist in removing dangerous curves on the Estopia Connell highway. Pasco road crews push state action after multiple authorizations by the highway department. The chamber also seeks Fruitland street extension to the highway and to open dead end streets in Garden Tracts.
The WPA sponsored playfield serves about 40 children daily with two age groups. Younger kids engage in clay, cutting, coloring, and blocks with music and storytelling plus park swimming when hot. Older children play croquet soft ball checkers and may take swimming lessons. Weekdays 1 30 to 4 30 the facility is free and open to district children. gym indoors on windy days.
Patrons in Kennewick saw a news reel featuring a local family. The film shows Mrs. Meskimen, titled The Only Woman Boiler Maker in the United States, at her oil field work in Oklahoma with her husband, a scene captured years ago before the family moved to Kennewick, including other family shots.
The 1905 register shows the largest Kennewick Pioneer arrivals at the Fourth of July booth with many settlers listed by year from 1880 to 1904. Notable names include the Schuneman brothers of Pasco, the Lum and Sonderman families, and Scott Z. Henderson invited to address the reunion on Sunday July 3.

Benton county sends one of its largest delegations to the State Club Camp with twenty five delegates. Lois Giard of the Double R 4-H Club is the county yell leader. Delegates include members from Kennewick Prosser Richland Hover and other clubs.
Army engineers urged Congress to adopt a long term plan for Columbia and Snake rivers from Bonneville to Lewiston Idaho at an estimated cost of 138 million dollars. The program aims to improve navigation irrigation and power with locks dams and fish passage. Benefits to the public are seen as limited though future surplus power could offset costs.
Kennewick Courier-Reporter fronts a June 20 21 cooking school at the Liberty theatre for women. Cooks will learn measuring mixing and blending to prepare lattice-top pie frozen desserts and healthful meals with close ups of real kitchens. Local merchants sponsor gifts.
