Local district asks voters to approve an $15,000 bond to add a three room school building and a tax levy of 8 mills above the legal limit to cover operating costs. Board hopes to raise funds for classroom space, future manual training, and domestic science needs.
Beginning next Sunday the O W to R N restores morning and night passenger service between Yakima and Wallula after wartime cutbacks. The schedule mirrors the old one with Wallula connections to Spokane and Portland. Morning Wallula to Kennewick 5 40 arrival Yakima 9 30. Evening Yakima 6 30 arrival Wallula 11 00.
Floyd Kelso and his sons announce sale of Highlands fruit ranch to O A Frye and plan a Curtiss Standard biplane debut. Floyd will fly from Yakima Friday with Kennewick as base for a series of Inland Empire dates, while local residents relocate and visit family members in the region.
Gasoline supplies in Kennewick swung from shortage to surplus as a 12 500 gallon independent tank car arrived. Dealers urged car owners to stock up and noted a 58 percent test fuel selling at 36 cents while Standard gas is 34 cents. A second car may come by month’s end unless supply improves. a public talk on the Carlyon road bill is planned for July 29 at Highlands clubhouse.
1920 census figures show Benton County total population at 10 903, a 37.4 percent increase. Kennewick leads with 1 684 residents, just 14 shy of becoming the county’s largest town, while Prosser has 1 697 people.
Mrs W W Bird visits Walla Walla as others travel for business and leisure including Mather Prosser visitor, Schuster in the city, Swingle in Prosser, Soth and Domer in Yakima, Mona Yost in Walla Walla, and Jay Perry on a Spokane Wenatchee trip. Community group activities note picnic, bridge club, church improvements, and travels to Seattle, Alki Point, and the Sound.
The Columbia Irrigation District board elected Fred G. Pyle to replace Chester E. Edwards as manager. Pyle starts August 1 after Edwards resigns and will train locally. He previously held key roles with the U S Reclamation Service in construction engineering and maintenance. Noted speaker C E Whelan to visit Kennewick next Monday for a Modern Woodmen address at the M E church.
At a Commercial club luncheon the Inter county bridge committee released a written report urging Kennewick to push the $50,000 stock quota for the bridge project. The report notes Huber proposed a $450,000 build with $50,000 promotion and plans paid in stock, plus $15,000 cash, and calls for bids before final contract. It also states stock subscriptions and funds will be held by Union Trust of Walla Walla. The report is signed by five named committee members. Also, J A Nelson dies in Yakima at 63.
