A Kennewick merchants committee of the chamber of commerce votes to hold a citywide clearance sale from January 7 through 15. They expect deep discounts to reduce inventories ahead of new merchandise arrivals and plan extended store hours on Fridays and possibly Saturdays.
Residents recall a record cold spell in 1919 when the Columbia froze and a Ford crossed its ice from Kennewick to Benton. The Larsons, Britton, Mills, and Reed provide contemporary recollections of temperatures near 30 below zero and lasting winders, cherry trees surviving sap and regrowing after the chill.
Kennewick readers hear editor Jack Hanson defend a playful column title and dismiss a grape price dispute as a nonissue. The piece laments railroads and notes a simple seat policy mix up, revealing personal embarrassment and a tame punchline.
A Christmas tree and an electric heater ignited clothing pile in the Craven home at 1206 Sixth Avenue East. Firemen fought heavy flames for over an hour as knotty pine and varnish fed the blaze, causing $10 000 in total losses. Mrs Craven suffered a minor cut.
Kennewick city will install new officers at the first meeting of the year on Tuesday January 4. Kennewick city superintendent Richard Rector reviews 1948 gains including sewer expansion and park additions. He notes rapid growth outpacing records and predicts water distribution will be the major civic development issue in 1949.
James H. Hamilton representative of the United States Chamber of Commerce will address the Kennewick Chamber at the Arrow Grill during today’s noon meeting. He tours the northwest and will answer questions on the Hoover report and federal tax structure. Gene Spaulding is to become president at the January 6 annual event and name committee chairs shortly after.
Mrs. I N Mueller hosted relatives Verdella Mueller from Seattle Patricia Ann Luders from Walla Walla Mr and Mrs A C McClelland from Walla Walla and others for a Christmas family dinner. Harvey White hosted Christmas dinner with H W Hutchings Belton MT and Gene Blott family Bruce and Larry as guests.
Blanche Pratt was selected as Kennewick's first Woman of the Year by a judge committee. The nomination highlighted her service with the Benton County Tuberculosis Association Rebekah lodge Ladies Auxiliary Kennewick Fire Department Toastmistress Club and many other groups while noting her county duties and full time work at Pratt's garage.
Postmaster Walter Woenler thanks carriers and temp staff for a difficult Christmas mail period. Bill Christ ensen and Wilbur Creith are named among those handling high volumes. Community help from the Nyborgs and Island View residents eased space constraints at sub station two.
The city recorded a 1948 housing surge with total building valued at 7,050,302 dollars. Vista Homes officials estimate 2,025,000 for completed or under construction homes. Arbor Homes Inc adds 1,440,000, while Adams and Daily and Byron Bakers projects contribute tens of thousands more.
The 29 year old Harvey T Hein of Richland was killed Christmas morning when the car driven by James T Miller went into a ditch and hit a tree on Vista highway 30 miles west of Kennewick. Miller was injured but conscious with lacerations a knee injury and shock. Hein worked as an oiler for Atkinson Jones Construction and was born May 21 1919 in Benton City Minnesota. His body was forwarded by train accompanied by his uncle Walter Hein.
