Flood waters in Benton County caused thousands of dollars in damage after a survey. The Yakima river overflow washed out roads and one bridge while damaging homes and fields. Grosscup bridge disappeared downriver. Kiona and Richland bridges misaligned. Livestock losses rose in Richland and Benton City as farms, hay, potatoes, and orchards suffered. Travel resumed and repairs began amid warnings of renewed high water from melting snow. Yakima noted the peak flood as the highest on record with Sunnyside dam surpassing 1917 levels.

Repairs Delay Reopening Of Local School
In a special meeting school officials extended vacation by a week, delaying reopening to January 8. Delays stem from rail washouts delaying lumber for floors and foundation deterioration requiring new basement structure and ventilation improvements.

Christmas Snow Fills District With Eight Inches Of White
After a mild spell, Sunday afternoon snow began and by Christmas morning eight inches covered the district. Commerce and mail were up 25 percent over last year as holiday trade improved. Flooding hindered some gatherings but church programs were well attended and over 150 children were cared for by local committees assisted by civic groups.
Train Service Resumed After Days of Delay
Train service to the coast was resumed yesterday over the Northern Pacific after several days of delay. Two trains had gotten through from the coast and a regular schedule was expected to be resumed today. Down the Yakima valley there has been service of a sort with the Union Pacific using the NP tracks between Kennewick and Yakima. Several cars of fruit loaded and ready for shipment were delayed and fruitmen are anxious to have schedules resumed.

Rabbit Drive on New Year’s Day in Finley Hover District
A community rabbit drive will be held New Year’s Day in the Finley Hover district. All sportsmen are invited to participate as rabbits are abundant again this year. The drive begins at the bridge below Finley at nine in the morning and ends near Hover at one. Ladies will serve a free lunch, and ammunition will be sold on the grounds at cost. No rifles will be allowed.

Benton City Man Killed in Christmas Day Crash
James Carver died after his car collided with a vehicle driven by W A DeGood on the Benton City highway. Carver and his three brothers were en route home for Christmas dinner. the group and DeGood family members suffered injuries and were hospitalized. The month’s third fatal Benton County crash is noted alongside two recent fatalities.

Government to spend 25000 on C grade apples for unemployed
