The local post office battles an unprecedented flood of mail with fifteen extra clerks five women and additional carriers and parcel post workers. Two trucks now run double shifts as thousands of envelopes parcels and packages overwhelm space and cause long lines at windows.
The Boy Scouts report a Saturday collection netting about 40 dollars in papers and tin cans. A second pickup is planned Monday morning December 27, with instructions for bundling papers and preparing cans for easy handling. Residents outside city limits may take items to the Columbia Irrigation District office. Cans go to the small building opposite the Kennewick hotel.
Election for Kennewick Valley community committee officials in Benton County will be held again December 27 at the AAA office assembly room in Kennewick. Information on farmers needs and supplies will be distributed. Strong turnout urged after December 16 postponement.
Alma Circle will meet next Monday December 27 with Mrs H E Oliver on Kennewick Avenue.
Principal Ray Normile requests submissions of every student who served from Kennewick High School for a local school service record plaque. Report missing names to Mr. Normile with name rank and outfit to be included.
SF3c Fain L. Young, brother of Mrs. Jacobs and son of Mrs. Mazie Young of Seattle formerly of Finley, is on furlough visiting relatives and friends. He serves with the Seebees.
The county overachieved its War Chest quota while Kennewick underperformed. Kennewick’s drive combined War Chest Recreational Fund and Community Chest with a county quota of 9000 for War Chest. The Recreational Fund and Community Chest each received about half of 2000. The War Chest raised over 22,000 largely from the nearby project.
A 40 pound box of Christmas Seals money arrived from Hanford schools to Mrs. J. R. Ayers chairing the Benton County Tuberculosis League. Contributions totaled 221.34 with local booth sales adding 150 and overall receipts exceeding 2000, pending full report.
City council heard a proposal for a new footbridge across the canal on Fruitland street to serve Kennewick's new school. Officials noted Canal street already parallels the ditch and has crossings at Kennewick Avenue and Dayton street, deeming the footbridge sufficient. Further study planned on Garden Tracts dead end streets and access to the highway.
The couple wed as Glenn E Cox son of Mr and Mrs L A Cox of Highlands and Nellie De R Reed whose residence was Longview. Parents of the groom served as witnesses to the ceremony. The groom entered the army on Monday after the nuptials.
At Tuesday noon Kiwanis club members held a gift auction during their regular meeting. Christmas gifts donated by each member were sold with proceeds sent to the Orthopedic hospital in Seattle. The event drew much merriment over blind purchases and rising bids.
