Kennewick high school defeated Mabton in a debate on the Monroe Doctrine ending with the affirmative win. Debaters included William Sly Barton Sherk and Ruth Cresswell for Kennewick while Mabton was represented by Miss McIvor Mr Flower and Mr Dilley. Judges were W L Ricks Rev Weiss and Mrs Haring. The next meet is February 4.

Francis Kelley Civil War veteran dies at home
Francis Kelley a 74 year old Civil War veteran and pioneer resident died suddenly of heart failure at his home near the city last Sunday evening. His daughters Florence and Eleanor accompanied by neighbors witnessed the death. He is survived by three daughters Florence Eleanor Clara and three sons Frank Carl and others in Menomonie Wisconsin. Burial plans were made for his old home in Menomonie.

Big Christmas Tree Delayed Awaited in Cascade Locks
Plans for the community Christmas tree at Second and Yakima streets are ready but the evergreen from the Columbia river area has not yet arrived. It is expected tonight or tomorrow morning on the Twin Cities steamer after being held at Cascade Locks. Work will begin as soon as it arrives for the 6:45 PM ceremonies featuring Santa Claus for the children.

Pioneer farmer dies at his valley home
Geo. C. Lea a long time valley resident died Saturday night after a week of lagrippe illness at his Finley area home. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Finley church with Rev. Wood officiating. Interment in city cemetery. Lea homesteaded his farm in 1894 and leaves a widow two sons Joseph and George a sister Miss Harriet Lea and a daughter Mrs. Bullock of Great Falls Montana.

Unidentified Man Found Hanged at Horse Heaven Shack
A stranger was found dead hanging from a rafter in a deserted sheep camp shack at Horse Heaven. No ID was found on the body, which Mr. Shockley’s party brought to town and I. N. Mueller buried. Police conclude death by self-hanging with a rope.

Church Ferry Moves to New Crossing at Railroad Bridge
The Church ferry was moved from Wallula to a crossing at the railroad bridge between here and Finley. Captain S. W. Winslow of the Umatilla towed the boat upriver. W. D. Church has not yet relocated his family or finalized a new home, likely renting near the landing for a time. The move marks a historic shift for a river crossing long part of the valley’s early infrastructure.
