Visitors from River Road disrupt Kennewick club meeting to press for recognition of new citizens and housing. Speakers applaud American resilience in crowded tent homes while noting rapid housing growth in Richland and 428 houses built since 1940 in Kennewick.
Within city limits construction pace for homes and business is rising as 106 busi-buildings are complete and many more planned. The Kennewick Schubert club members deserve orchids for their outstanding Sunday night final Christmas concert performance.
The Episcopal Junior Guild held its last meeting of the year at Mrs. Gene Spaulding home electing Gertrude Brantingham as President Freida Lum as Vice President Gertrude McGregor as Secretary and Florence Stillwell as Treasurer. Guild cookbooks are on sale at the Guilk Real Estate office with bindings and layouts described and lists of guild members and ads inside.
Post master Roger Records announced plans to add one mounted carrier and two extra foot carriers within three months. Door deliveries will begin in the Green Homes Addition and nearby areas south of Fourth Avenue where mail is now left at neighborhood boxes.
Kennewick schools present a Christmas program Friday at 8 00 p m in the high school auditorium. The evening includes band selections carols and songs by the junior high glee club high school girls ensemble a fourth grade chorus and the high school choir with a dramatic tableau of the Christmas story. Soloists include Jessie Grimshaw Betty Jean Wilson Doris Pratt Kathryn Spurgeon Arvon Curtis and Don Tinsley under directors Lorayne Larson Patricia Wood Marguerite Hansen and Robert Hunsley.
The Tulley and Anderson Contracting Firm of Seattle starts work at Lampson Home Sites west of town with a model home due for inspection by February 1. E A Erickson of Sunnyside has optioned Garden Tracts land to build thirty homes. Modern Homes Inc plans 106 homes west of the city in the Wist Homes addition. Amon says momentum in housing is rising and could ease the 1948 shortage.
The Courier Reporter moves Christmas and New Years editions one day earlier with mailings ahead of schedule. They invite readers to submit news and ads early for the next two weeks, noting the calendar’s impact and Twain referenced weather observations.
C M Cutler urges holiday home decor as a shared American tradition. Practical ideas include evergreen rope and colored lights, holly wreaths with electric candles, a framed front window outline of a Christmas tree, lighted snowman cutouts, and a front entrance lit by Projector Floodlights.
The Church of the Nazarene will present its Christmas program next Tuesday at 8 PM. After opening songs and readings, the event features recitations from various classes, dialogues, solos, a pantomime, and a living picture with numerous named participants. A white offering for the Ministrial relief fund will be collected at the end.
Postmaster Roger Records says the Kennewick Substation at Richmond Implement Co on Front Street now sells stamps and handles mailing. It will be open 10 AM to 8 PM for the rest of the week and Sunday, with hours after Sunday set by mail volume. General Delivery will operate 1 PM to 6 PM Sunday. patrons urged to mail Christmas parcels early and use Air Mail for timely cards.
The Kennewick Business and Professional Women will host a Christmas party on Thursday, December 18, at 8 p.m. in Margaret Reymore's home. Attendees should bring a gift for exchange.
The Schuhbert Club presented its annual Christmas concert at the Methodist church to a full house. Miss Marguerite Hansen directed the chorus, with Miss Linda Brutzman substituting candlelighting duties for Jimmy Fox who was ill. Mr. and Mrs. Neuman of Seattle accompanied on organ and piano, with pieces by Rubinstein Bach Handel and others. A reception followed with decorated tables and coffee service.
Kennewick Kiwanians enjoyed performances by two young students of Mrs. Della Obergh of Pasco LeRoy Spitzer and Don Tinsley singing solos and a duet. The group urged members to support Camp Fire work and area boards. Walt Hansen chairs the Kennewick board. A joint installation with Richland and Pasco clubs is planned at the Pasco Recreation Hall on December 30 with John Neuman as president and George Cloud as executive. Reed becomes secretary treasurer replacing E A Silliman.
Helen Erickson visits her parents Mr and Mrs John Erickson in Kennewick after spending two and a half years in Europe with the American Army. An Army librarian, she was stationed briefly in England and Paris before transferring to Germany where she served as area supervisor of libraries for military and civilian personnel.
Pfc. Allen E. Shirk sustained injuries during training. His mother Mrs. W. G. Shirk will visit him at the camp after he recuperates, with a cast expected for five to six months.
Chris Christensen Jr. lost three fingers and injured a fourth while using a power saw at his River Road home last Sunday. He was treated at Lourdes hospital for two days and has since returned home.
Santa will visit Kennewick Saturday starting at 1 PM from the West end of the Kennewick Avenue shopping district and move east to stores on Avenue C. Stores will stay open until 9 PM on Friday Saturday Monday and Tuesday. Santa brings candy for good children and will collect gift requests starting at 1 PM Saturday.
The Choir of the Christian Church presents Scripture in Music on Sunday night December 21 at the Christian Church on Washington Street and Third Avenue. The program features choral numbers and solos depicting the Birth of Christ with readings. Miss Imogene Spurgeon will lead and Richard Riegel is pianist and choir director. The public is invited.
Physicians warned Rand may lose his left leg after a pedestrian collision on Clarke Street Pasco between 2nd and 1st streets. Earl fed was attempting to change a tire when struck by an automobile causing minor injuries to both vehicles. Our Lady of Lourdes hospital reported treatment and slippery wet street conditions with no arrests.
Plans are under way to build 1000 mass constructed homes at Richland for permanent Hanford plant workers. Carleton Schugg of the Atomic Energy Commission says February is a target period. AEC will cooperate with housing committees in Kennewick and Pasco to ease the housing shortage and develop measures to solve it.
Owen W W Hurd, a leading electrical engineer, is named manager of the Benton County Public Utility Districts power distribution, succeeding J B Whitehead of Prosser. Hurd, formerly assistant district manager and district engineer for the Bonneville Power Administration in Spokane, will start January 5. He is a 1926 Oregon State College graduate with a long career in utilities and federal service.
The Christmas Ship drive in Kennewick nears 300 in donations as the last day of the campaign arrives. Reverend J N Tinsley of the Church of the tee and others organize the effort with relief supplies bound for needy families in Germany and Austria. The Seattle departure is scheduled soon after Christmas, with additional collection at the Benton Theatre led by Rev. Coan.
Troop 24 of the Boy Scouts receives a shipment of Christmas trees sold to support troop activities. Leader Walter Woehler directs sales with Scouts participating to assist the effort.
