In a wartime economy shortages and panicked packing distort supply from farmers to consumers. Government controls hold back beef pork and dairy, while meat and milk ideals fail to reach price and quality expectations. Kennewick will gain another eating place this Saturday when the Angus Grill opens adjacent to the Commercial Hotel. Built and operated by Kenneth A. McMillan, the new restaurant is fully modern and meets health department standards with an A card to open.
The chamber of commerce council discusses securing a permanent farm labor camp as Congress weighs housing needs for migrant workers. Local reliance on outside help, including 300 Midwest farmers, helped harvest the season. A special committee will press the Washington delegation on the issue. The Food for Victory committee plans further talks tomorrow night.
Sacajawea district of Blue Mountain Council held a quarterly court of honor in the American Legion Hall. Eleven Troop 27 scouts received Second Class awards, with Sam Houston Lynn Wilder and Bobby Clark advancing to First Class. Leonard Lortz earned a music merit badge. Council officials presented charters and conducted tenderfoot investitures for Troops 24 and 23 Pasco and Kennewick respectively.
Scouts and Kiwanis launch an intensive waste paper and tin can drive in Kennewick and across the country. Paper bundles or boxes may be placed on curbs this Saturday only and must be tied. Cans must be clean with labels removed ends cut and flattened. Packaged in cartons or sacks, then curbside for city truck collection.
Thirteen government condemned properties in the Hanford project were disposed of after owners did not protest appraisals or appear in court. Valuations include Richland Church of the Assembly of God 1250, Richland Woman's Club 800, Richland English Lutheran church 525, Hanford Masonic lodge 1500. All Grange members urged to attend Kennewick Valley pot-luck supper Friday December 17 at 7.

Francis E. Jennings was sentenced by the federal district court at Yakima to two years imprisonment for possessing mash intended for liquor distillation in a trailer near Hanford. The sentence was suspended and Jennings placed on probation for two years after a guilty plea following a rejected suppression motion. Sydney Livesey, attorney for Jennings, had moved to suppress evidence but withdrew after prosecution rested.
Thompson and Foraker win seats on local irrigation boards. Lemar Foraker becomes Kennewick district director with first year meetings in January after Tuesday election. A J Thompson wins three year term in Columbia district while Harry Hampton unopposed for two year term. Johnston retires after 25 years service. Ole Brue remains the third member.
Merle Babcock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Babcock, returned from Naples with an eye injury repaired by grafting an eye from a casualty. On a later hospitalization he regained vision to the point of no longer needing glasses. He served in military police on a long Bomber flight to Sicily and helped clear snipers. he and four others will receive the Purple Heart on January 2.
At the Benton County Pomona Grange annual meeting in Kiona Benton 57 new officers were installed. The group endorsed a substitute resolution to lower meat point values and ease slaughter restrictions to boost distribution and conserve supplies. Reports from Buena Vista, Finley, Horse Heaven, and Kennewick Valley noted member gains, fund drives, and community aid through Red Cross and war funds.
The Twin City Navy Mothers will hold its regular meeting Wednesday evening December 22 at 8 in the Christian church annex in Pasco. Officers for the coming year will be elected and all members are urged to attend. An exchange of gifts and refreshments will be served by the Kennewick ladies.
A called meeting of the Food for Victory committee will be held at the office of W W Skuse Friday night at 7 30. All members are urged to attend as the matter is vital to farmers in the community. The committee includes processing plant reps and two delegates from each local grange. discussion will cover a permanent farm labor camp and farm labor for next year.
Investigators report a growing black market in meat and gasoline in Kennewick after complaints from the rationing board. They cite unambiguous violations of rationing rules, with penalties up to 10000 dollars or ten years in prison for deliberate offenses.
Tex Wilson, former White Kitchen operator, has bought the highway restaurant near Paulsen's bridge. After two weeks of remodeling, refrigeration is being installed and an opening is planned for Friday. The shop will operate 24 hours daily and offer steaks dinners and short orders with a neon steaming coffee cup trade mark.
Benton county Christmas Seals drive surpasses prior years with over two million seals distributed. Chairwoman Mrs. J. R. Ayers reports $1579 collected so far in this end of the county, while other sections have yet to report totals.
Finley Mr. and Mrs. Brown report C. W. Brown underwent an operation in a Portland hospital last Thursday and is recovering well. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Brown left for Portland last Wednesday as Mrs. Brown visits their daughter and family there.
Ed Hulet of Chelan and the Falques Hinkley and Benson families plus Clint Glassner and others shared dinners with Ernest Sherry and Ellsworth O hair groups. Mak Howard visited from Seattle Spokane to see his father W Howard. Mrs Scheideman from Portland is visiting her mother Mrs Brock.
