New York City financier Alfred P. Sloan Jr. endows the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for economic research. His brother Harold S. Sloan is named executive director, former economics professor at State Teachers College in Montclair, New Jersey.
Six escaped convicts held an unarmed prison guard hostage at the South Carolina State Penitentiary in Columbia. They refused clemency offers from Governor Johnston and, after tear gas from the National Guard, surrendered. The guard was stabbed and all six now face murder charges.

Christmas seals are being used on Kennewick letters and packages as thousands receive the anti tuberculosis seals across the nation. Mrs J E Mulkey leads the local drive with Mrs J R Ayers aiding. Returns or seals may be obtained at Vibber Gifford Drug. Benton County set a $592 29 record last year with a 40 percent county gain and the state seeks another 10 percent rise.
A father donated skin to his daughter Ruthie Croft after infection left two ugly sores. Eight patches of skin from Rev Croft’s legs were grafted under general anesthesia to cover a large area. The operation progressed well and both donor and recipient recovered with no complications.
W. J. Skinner and Glenn Felton undertook a coastbound trip on business last week. A slippery road caused their car to slip sideways and skid downhill for nearly a thousand feet with no oncoming traffic. The engine died but the vehicle stayed on the road, leaving them shaken but unharmed.
The Rev Mr Smith of the American Sunday School Union spoke to an appreciative audience in the Baptist church Sunday evening.
A Kiwanis club noon program featured a Standard Oil Company film showing the oil business from wells to finished products. Don Gray, lubrication engineer, operated the projector as Glenn Felton Lawrence Scott and Brick Oliver led the event for local dealers.
The Community Chest asks subscribers to vote yes or no on continuing Chest operations. Started December 11, the drive used mail ballots with names and donation amounts, seeking community approval. Only two negative votes received. urgent request for responses to finish year work.
Mr and Mrs W W Winkle hosted a surprise potluck supper Friday for Mrs Winkle on her birthday. The evening featured a bridge game as entertainment.
Forty five Washington State College students from Benton County plan to return home for the Christmas holidays, December 17 to January 2. Names listed include Kennewick residents Eugene Babcock Harland Carlson Martha Chellis Pearl Copeland Philip Dean and others from Richland Plymouth White Bluffs and Kiona along with the University students Margaret Barnett Walter Carlson and more.
Mrs. Walter Knowles filled in as a substitute teacher the first of the week for Miss Hazel Burdette who was ill.
The paper will go to press Wednesday evening next week instead of Thursday, providing advertisers an extra day for pre Christmas selling and aiding procrastinators to finish notices. Correspondents are told to submit copy a day earlier than usual.
Ted Watkins defeats incumbent Guy Story by four votes to become the new director of the Kennewick Irrigation District. A four-count recount left Watkins with 139 votes to Story 135 among 275 ballots at Highlands clubhouse with one ballot blank. In Columbia district, Johnston ran unopposed.
The Christmas committee led by Mrs. H. A. Linn has gathered and repaired hundreds of toys with help from boy scouts and camp fire girls. Six dozen families are to be served, aiming to ensure no child is overlooked on Christmas morning. Extra cash is still needed for items beyond toy stock.
The junior and senior high students are busy making items for the Christmas season. Ninth and tenth grade cooking classes create homemade candies under Miss Viola Sykes. The Related Arts class makes attractive greeting and gift cards this week.
Mother Goose parade attracted about six hundred children lining streets though rain hindered some acts. Santa Claus won first prize with Bret Rabbit, cash awards given at the theater, and Kennewick hosted Old St Nick for the first time in years.
J. R. Ayers of Hover, Benton County's largest wool grower, notes past growth but warns next year looks bleak. Wool prices have fallen from 30 cents in April to 17 cents in November, lamb prices from 12–13 cents to 9 cents in Chicago. Expenses are higher, and business recovery hinges on resumed activity. An open winter and good range grazing, plus cheap feed, could lower costs.
Mrs T W Payne attended the funeral of Mrs M S Berry in Walla Walla on Friday. The ceremony honored Mrs Berry with local attendees and family present at the service.
The W P A project on the school grounds progresses with sidewalks fronting the building to be completed this week. A new connecting walk will join the two buildings after completion. Plans include back walks, a lawn path, watering system, possible concrete tennis courts, and athletic field curbing improvements.
At the Benton County Pomona Grange annual meeting in Yale on December 11, officers were installed by Joe Slaven of Yakima. The chapter reported 552 members, a gain of 51, and noted strong activity from the chaplain, lecturer, and overseer, with plans for a new master and continued harmony.
The Christmas Seal Sale in Benton County shows wide public support as many donors send notes with payments. Chairwoman Mrs J R Ayers notes more letters than ever and some say they will send seals next year. Early returns over two weeks are slightly higher than last year. The Tuberculosis League plans to sustain its 1938 educational program if support continues.
DeMolay honors a charter member as the group inducts members numbering a little over fifty youths under 21. Following the meeting the boys served light refreshments.
Mr and Mrs F S McClure were dinner guests at the Harry Wadsworth home in Pasco on Sunday.
L G Moore, 88, died at Pasco hospital from brain concussion after last week’s train accident near Kennewick. A bachelor with no known relatives, he moved to Kennewick in 1902 and helped early civic life, leaving a legacy as a longtime community figure and former supporter of the Courier printing plant. Funeral plans were not announced.
Kennewick grass growers face firm bids as canners offer 5 1 4 cents net for next year with additional pay for eight inch grass. Producers foresee prices not dropping below six and a quarter cents for packed grass. Kennewick’s renowned long green asparagus draws cannery interest with premiums and multi year contracts aiding expansion plans.
Fire Chief Mr. Pratt reports useful information from a Wenatchee gathering of Washington State Fire Chiefs. Plans for a summer fireman’s college were laid. Pratt was elected district vice president and cited a remodeled station to help lower city insurance rates.
