Everett Dwane Schmitt age 19 was killed in a head on collision with a car driven by Charles E Loveland of Government Camp Oregon. The accident occurred at Fruitland and Columbia Avenue on US Highway 410. Police blamed high winds and a possible tire blowout for the crash. Loveland was in satisfactory condition at Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Pasco. Funeral services will be held Friday at Mueller Chapel with burial at Sunnyside.
Postmaster Roger Records announces a new parcel post substation in Kennewick opening at 1 pm Friday the 13th and staying open until 7 pm. Saturday hours are 11 am to 7 pm and it is closed Sunday with Sunday window 1 to 5 pm. From Monday to Saturday the substation runs 10 am to 8 pm. extra Sunday 10 am to 1 pm on December 22.
Last Thursday Mrs. Mary Hutchins, 84, was knocked down on Kennewick Avenue by a bicycle, which sped away. She suffered facial bruises and shock and was treated by a doctor. The author calls for stern city action to curb sidewalk cycling by youths and urges safer energy outlets.
Kennewick's Red Devils boxing team thrilled a full house at the Rec hall in an intramural bout. Coaches Flynn and Clifford train daily as plans grow for matches against Pasco High School and Yakima YMCA, with officers elected and Legion support backing the program.
N L Foraker was unanimously approved for another term on the Kennewick Irrigation District board in a Tuesday election with an extremely light vote. Other board members include Frank Lampson as president and F G Gragg as director.
On December 7 Benton City hosted the annual Achievement meeting with 200 4 H members parents and leaders. Rev. George Nafus led community singing and Rev. G G Schmid spoke on Planning for Youth. KIRO awarded blue ribbons for growth in membership.
Kennewick Chamber of Commerce installed new officers with a brief ceremony. Secretary R C Rector outlined past activities and noted efforts to attract a Studebaker dealer, with Pasco chosen over Kennewick from 16 applications. Members consider pursuing a local agency in addition to Pasco. Rolfe Tuve as incoming president urged rapid committee list completion.
The Kennewick Business and Professional Women's club honors forgotten women in state mental hospitals by sending Christmas gifts. Mae Mosher organized gift collection and mailing to the state hospital relief chair. Next meeting is at Mrs. McDonald’s on the 16th. members should bring food gifts for overseas clubs and a gift for their secret pal.
Kennewick Church of the Nazarene launches a building program underwriting much of the cost and plans a new church at the present site. The facility will include an auditorium for 350 to 400 and educational wings to serve at least 300.
The Kennewick Methodist church thirty voice choir under Edith Aune will present a Christmas concert Sunday December 15 at 4 pm with Eulalie Ferguson at the new Moller organ. Soloists Pat Wood and others will perform Handel and classical works, with organ numbers by Anne and others, and a program of carols and anthems.
Kennewick Lions beat Benton City Kiowa Bears 49 9 with Kennewick’s Kennewick leading scorers Log Lewis McCune Shoemaker Elliott and more. Friday they host Pendleton Buckaroos on Kennewick floor at 7 30 PM. In overtime Kennewick topped River View Panthers 18 21 to seal the win. a B game followed 35 5.

The climax of the Boy Scout Round-Up will be held in Pasco high school gym on Thursday December 19. All Cub Scouts Boy Scouts Senior Scouts with parents and friends may attend and units with best records will receive special recognition. New scouts since September form a large Y shape in the gym with older members behind them. A Court of Honor will feature scouts presenting homemade horses.
Kennewick stores will stay open until 8 pm through next week to aid Christmas buying. Chamber of Commerce surveys show many merchants offer extended hours for Richland shoppers, though not all stores will stay open. Food dealers and non specialty shops will close at regular times.
The Kennewick PTA hosted a school wide Christmas song fest in the high school auditorium with first through sixth graders performing songs. Each grade presented carols under teachers including Mrs Wood and Mrs McCamish while space limited future performances were noted for the first and fourth grades.
Kennewick's Coal Rationing Panel dissolved after John L. Lewis ordered miners back to work. Brick Oliver, panel chairman, said mail embargoes were lifted and the local panel will take no further action unless circumstances require it. No word of fuel shortages reported locally.
Santa Claus arrives in Kennewick on Saturday December 21 to visit stores and hand out candy to children. The Chamber of Commerce aids in his duties and hopes to attract visitors, with expectations he may extend his stay to Tuesday December 23 for further welcomes.
