Kennewick endures a historic cold snap with a 27 below zero reading, five degrees colder than the station’s previous low since 1884. Snow piles up ten inches as fuel shortages strain homes and businesses, pipes freeze, and a main heating line bursts, while forecasts hint at more cold weather ahead.
Weather notes recount extreme temperatures at the local station with August 1898 hitting 115 degrees the highest on record and July 1911 reaching 114. The period shows four months above 100 degrees in 1911 with June 106 July 114 August 104 September 100 and May 99.
Fuel Administrator E. O. Keene announces that stores may remain open until eight o clock on Saturday evening restoring extended hours for the weekend.
Visitors to Robert Ely Post see a newly furnished Legion room praised for good taste and comfort. The space features brown Administer rugs, tinted walls, oak furniture, a reading table, two leather Davenport sofas, Mortis chairs, card tables, writing desks, a phonograph, and madras window treatments with blue drapes.
F R Jeffrey leaves Kennewick to attend a state American Legion conference in Washington DC where he plans to meet his newly wed wife Mrs Ray N Rose Jeffrey formerly of New York City Mrs Rose married Jeff at the Cook County courthouse Chicago on November 13 and the couple will reside in Kennewick while their Second street home is furnished.
Crews fought freezing temperatures to protect apples worth over a quarter million dollars stored in Wenatchee Yakima Kennewick Richland and other warehouses. Oil heaters coal stoves and improvised heat kept fruit safe as temperatures dipped to 26 above in some buildings. Local dealers rushed oil stoves and kerosene with eight thousand gallons in reserve.
A major Pasco blaze destroyed three brick buildings and three wooden structures, including the J E Sullivan drug store and post office, leaving Roy VanNess a Pasco high student dead in the basement. He was a nephew of the local police chief and was popular at school. The Bank of Pasco building was gutted and the others owned by J B Crain and associates.
The well furnished post room shows pride in service with a pool table and a player piano ordered. George Sanderling and Roy Winkenwerder led the furnishings, and a stove donated by Kennewick Hardware keeps the room warm. The Kennewick Lodge Knights of Pythias elected officers and conferred page ranks on three candidates.
O. A. Fry of the Highlands departed last week to visit relatives in Ohio. He recently bought a 200 acre farm near Chelan which will be operated by his son-in-law.
In Tuesday's regular annual elections at the Columbia and Kennewick Irrigation Districts Jas Johnston won re election as director in the Columbia district while G N Hughes of Kiona was elected to succeed himself in the Kennewick district.
The National Grand Concert Players show, set for Saturday, under Boy Scouts auspices, and the Meneley Lyceum second program for Monday, have been postponed. The Concert Players likely will perform in January. no new Meneley date has been received.
A telephone message reports the death of Mrs. L G Spaulding this morning after months of illness and a recent major operation. Funeral details are not yet available. She lived in the community for years until Dr Spaulding joined the army two years ago.
Kennewick schools will stay open through the Christmas break with fuel on hand. To conserve energy and aid country bus riders, classes will start at 10 a.m. until the weather moderates. The planned school entertainment has been postponed until after the holidays.
Mrs Smith who had been gravely ill at her daughter Mrs Robert Dorothy’s home died Friday morning. Funeral services are set for 1 30 p m Sunday at the M E church.
Six kitchen range explosions were reported this morning due to frozen water pipes. In the S H Whitehorn residence the kitchen interior was demolished, a steel range shattered, a nearby gasoline range wrecked, windows broken, and a ceiling hole created. Mrs Whitehorn escaped serious injury, suffering only facial soot and minor bruises. Dr Brunn's home suffered similar damage but he was unharmed after turning away from the stove.
Kennewick struggles with a severe fuel shortage as 27 tons of Canadian coal arrive for distribution in 500 pound lots, with permits limited to a half ton of coal or half a cord of wood per household. Fuel Administrator E O Keene and Mayor Tweedt impose rationing and examine surplus stocks while awaiting more shipments and considering emergency transfers.
