Government refi nancing of 1.5 billion dollars set for December 1 with 2 percent long term rate. Short notes yield 1.25 percent interest. Commerce Dept. notes a 20,092,000 trade surplus for ten months. Employment registration for Social Security old age annuities extended to December 15.
Mr and Mrs Wolfgang von Hagen describe a tribe of head hunting Indians near the head waters of the Amazon. They recount heads of enemies dried and prized as trophies after battles while under the influence of jungle wine made from chewed roots.
Max Schmeling sails to the United States and will appear before the New York State Athletic Commission to arrange a world heavyweight championship bout with James J. Braddock. A Schmeling victory would make him the first heavyweight to hold the title twice.
At a convention of the Associated Grocery Manufacturers of America in New York three quarters of trade ap proved the Robinson-Patman Anti Price Discrimination Law. The week’s lowest NYSE seat price fell to $89. Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe led equipment orders with 20 million dollars of rails locomotives and freight cars.
Kennewick will dedicate its new gymnasium Friday with a ceremony and two basketball games against Walla Walla. The first contest starts at seven o'clock due to Locust Grove party traffic, followed by the main game. Wa-Hi's storied program is expected to provide a strong test.
The Kennewick Amusement Association won approval at the chamber of commerce meeting to purchase about eight acres including rodeo grounds and adjacent space to ensure full control and parking. Improvements totaling around fifteen hundred dollars this year are paid, with plans to loan funds for the land purchase and to plan next summer’s show.
Locust Grove grangers host Kiwanis and chamber of commerce gathering tomorrow night at their hall in Horse Heaven. The entertainment follows the grange session with each group providing part of the program and a rare cross town representation attending the party.
The chamber of commerce endorsed a resolution this noon calling on the state legislature to propose a constitutional amendment for the next election. The amendment would forbid diverting gasoline tax money to purposes other than road building, with only one dissenting vote on the motion.

Miss Katherine Ponti, debate coach, and team members Frank Wisger and Robert Wheelhouse traveled to Yakima Wednesday to argue the resolution that all electric utilities should be governmentally owned and operated. Wisger opened for the Affirmative, Wheelhouse spoke second and rebutted. The decision was close. cross-questioning was introduced and may be adopted by schools statewide this year.
The Columbia Irrigation District plans to move into the old Emigh building beside Washington Hardware Co. A fire proof vault will protect records while the two story concrete structure provides storage, shop space, and a front office. The second floor remains unused for now.
The Benton County Teachers Association held a banquet at the Arrow Grill at 6 30 PM. The program featured an address of welcome by Supt Black a mouth harp solo by Nelson Quast a high school glee club sextet Peggy Burton readings Ruth Reinhart Erlyn Carlson Frank Wisger and Raymond Peterson trumpets and a harp solo by Bill Helm short reports by August Johnson and Arthur Rogers delegates to the WEA assembly in Tacoma. Stanley Atwood state superintendent of public instruction elect delivered the main address.
The Order of Rainbow for Girls held a regular meeting last Saturday evening with a banquet at Arrow Grill honoring Dy dy Swindle Supreme Inspector for Washington and Alaska and five grand officers. The charter was presented to the local assembly and grand crosses of colors were conferred on Virginia Visger Beatrice Paulson Martha Chellis Kennewick Margaret Cox and Louise Mobster Hartford. Refreshments followed hosted by Mary Green Trula Selph Zelma Erickson Virginia Visger and Mrs. W. S. Green.
C R Stark lauds Joe Alexander in the Spokesman-Review for helping a stranded cow elk. The local youth walked 12 miles round trip to fetch water, reviving the animal so it could return to its native haunts.
Clarence Yedica and I N Muller are Spokane visitors today, stopping in as part of a regional tour and meeting local officials.
The annual community chest drive begins Saturday December 12. Last year the Benton County drive raised 685 dollars 25 cents to fund milk for the county Health Council Boy Scouts Red Cross Campfire Girls and other charities with expenses totaling 710 dollars 68 cents. This year milk needs rise and the committee asks employees and firms to contribute at least one day’s pay to cover the territory in one day.
Althea Rebekah Lodge No. 182 marked its 30th anniversary with guests from Pasco and Kiona. Seven charter members remain. Retta Tripp and Loyd Peckenpaugh have moved away. Members performed a program including histories, solos, readings, and a Pink and Green Club history, followed by refreshments.
Kennewick police capture Claude Walker 24 alias Howard Lovewell and several accomplices who aided a jail escape. He faces at least three charges including jail breaking and forgery. A female accomplice received a maximum 20 year sentence in Franklin county last week.

Behrman wins the Kennewick mayoral race as five local offices are filled with A C Amon and others returning to service. City clerk treasurer and attorney are reelected along with council members. 117 votes cast in Columbia Irrigation District election with Johnston Ole Brue and Ed Frauen prominent. Unanimous vote in Ethernet district for Hudnall. other board members are Guy Story and Mr Gragg. In the Prosser utility district election Preston Royer features among candidates.
The annual Christmas Seal Sale for the Benton County Tuberculosis League enters its second week with growing public interest. Early returns show an increase over the first week and organizers urge wider cooperation to keep health bright for children and prevent tuberculosis.

The grade school plans a December 18 pageant titled Windows featuring every child. Glenn Silliman, known as the Toy Man, will visit from the Toy Shop as a poor little wanderer seeks a gift and is told only invited guests may approach Aunt Mae.
Theodore Petersen and brother Louis cleared a 45 acre Highlands tract and built a temporary house for winter work on spring planting plans. They came from Bemidji Minnesota seeking milder winters and irrigation experience. Their first crops may include sugar beets tomatoes and potatoes.
