The Richland Junior Chamber sponsors a War Bond screening of When Irish Eyes are Smiling at the Richland theatre on December 6 with two War Bond booths in the lobby. Navy show may precede the feature and receipts serve as bond receipts for purchasers.
War Bond sale quota for Benton county is two million dollars and most of it has been subscribed. Richland leads with strong public effort and a theater booth offers free movie tickets for bond buyers. County chair Wyman Cox notes robust voluntary support. coordinators include J. C. Howard Kennewick James Leavy Richland head Ethel Van Syckle and Ruth C. Anderson of Prosser.
Benton County Democratic Central committee will meet Saturday afternoon December 9 at the court house in Prosser to organize for the next campaign. Selection of county officers will be the principal order of business.
Richland choir the Meistersingers will close membership on Tuesday December 5 and no new members will be admitted until early February. Directed by Sydney Irving the group aims for 60 permanent members and rehearsals are Tuesdays at Columbia high school auditorium. Fifty attended the last rehearsal, and a full scale concert is planned for late January with a leading role in the December 23 Community Christmas program.
Rollie Truett of KGW Portland delivered the main address at the football dinner honoring Richland's Columbia High School squad. Harold Hofstedt said the event drew a capacity crowd with Coach John Eubank, managers, cheerleaders, and other guests in attendance. Tickets sold at $2.25 each.
Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Simmelink hosted a Sunday dinner for a Larkin family reunion, the first time in about 35 years all members gathered. Attendees included Mrs. Maude Larkin Dennis and her children and relatives from Richmond and California. Don, Dennis’ grandson, was absent due to navy service.
The Reverend Leo Dyson will give a Christmas message at the Kennewick P T A meeting on Wednesday evening December 13. Bob Spurgeon will read Night Before Christmas Reggie Buck will play a piano solo and four junior high boys will sing two carols as the audience joins in. The meeting opens at 8 p m.
Merchants report losses as a Nazi flag captured by Mrs. Hanson's son in Belgium disappeared from a Courier window display. Police seek information to recover the flag as the public is urged to report any sightings.
At a chamber meeting the case for locating an aviation department was raised to study possible developments. The group will push to include Kennewick in the CAA postwar improvements program.
The council likely to install meters in spring but failed to issue the order Tuesday. Investigators found strong sentiment in favor of the proposal, while bids from other firms were discussed. Mrs. I. N. Mueller spent the past week in Seattle with her daughter Verdella.
Son of Mr and Mrs William Clifton of Beach and 5th streets Kennewick now serving in England after basic training at Camp Wheeler Georgia.
E. C. Smith, executive director, outlined the new F1 Housing unit south of town now in full operation. He noted 1800 residents within eighty acres, with outdoor playfields, equipment, a community house, and a day nursery serving forty plus children. Facilities will be open to other citizens when programs permit.
Urban Koélker, newly elected president of the chamber of commerce, officially took the meeting from retiring president Gus Parker. Ellis Dorothy was elected vice president. All standing committee heads were re-elected to form the board of directors who will select committee workers from the membership. Koélker pledged cooperation to tackle three or four major community projects.
Elections set for Tuesday December 12 with one director to be chosen in each district. Incumbents are the only announced candidates so far. Voters are landowners within district boundaries or those holding ownership evidence. Polls run 1 to 8 p.m. in Columbia and Kennewick districts.
Mr and Mrs Joe Gerards received two letters from their son Henry a lieutenant in the air corps captured after a downed flight in German territory. Letters dated July 28 and August 6 report he is faring comparatively well. The couple traveled to Walla Walla last week for air field ceremonies where Henry was awarded the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters while still a prisoner of war in Germany.
105 votes cast in city general election with no office contests. J. C. Pratt elected mayor, Mrs. Campbell city clerk, Kenneth Serier attorney. Ward results include incumbents Holden Cox first ward, Scott and Richmond second ward, Campbell and Neel third ward, and Larry Oliver re-elected councilman at large.
The junior and senior high school bands will perform at the high school auditorium on Tuesday evening. Proceeds support uniforms, with about half the required amount already on hand. F A English notes the program includes band and majorettes, the junior band boasting fifty instruments and over twenty majorettes.

Mrs J R Ayers county chairman urges Bent on county residents to join the campaign honoring the 40th anniversary of the National Tuberculosis Association and the first Christmas seal. Seals available at hotels drug stores and printing office with a booth planned later for convenience and prompt delivery. Bonds in five and ten dollar denominations sent to county organizations.
Mrs. Mabel Neel and Miss Aroqua Simpson led a list of visitors from multiple chapters including Lt. Mary Ritter now in the Naval Nursing Corps at Pasco and Emma Rose of Northern Lights at Cooperstown. The group voted to buy a $100 hospital supply bond and planned a December 3 Christmas party with Lt. Ritter and Mrs. Dodd presiding.
The submarine Silversides earned the Presidential Unit Citation after four war patrols in Japanese waters in which it destroyed 24 enemy ships and damaged 12. Commander John S. Coye Jr. of Worcester, Mass., received the Navy Cross and two gold stars. Local sailor J. W. Reichenbach serves on the crew.
City wards will be divided into six to eight voting precincts after high vote totals within city limits. A special committee led by Mayor A W Campbell will redraw ward boundaries to create precincts including a housing unit and the Nob Hill area if it joins the city. The change aims to reduce ballot congestion and improve election administration.
The Richland Red Cross chapter will host a hospital garment cutting class next week. Mrs. G. H. Harrell announces the Benton county chapter publicity. Mrs. M. M. Campbell will assist volunteers Tuesday and Friday mornings. Garments are supplied by the Red Cross under H. M. Bailey. The class runs two hours between 8 and 12.
The library announces No Fines Week from December 4 to 9 allowing overdue books returned then to avoid fines, excluding rental collection. A new borrowing ruling effective November 1 imposes $1.00 for an individual card and $2.00 for a family card.
Lorraine Pence of Kennewick was tapped by Arrows sophomore women’s honorary at Whitman College in a November 23 ceremony. Arrows select twelve freshmen for scholarship activity and achievement, with two from social groups.
The Ladies Aid plans a December 12 tea at Bernard SloSarton’s to craft a useful item for the Washington Children's Home. Finley Grange schedules a December 8 meeting at 8 p.m. and the Finley Ladies Auxiliary reports 13 members and two visitors, purchasing a $10 T.B. bond and setting January 6 as the next all day session.
Harry Higley leads a Boy Scout group that delivered War Loan Committee literature in a house to house drive. The volunteers were Ralph Sage David Dickinson Herbert Carr Lewis Guilliland Eugene Higley and Kenneth Redfield.
