A Kennewick report shows Swift & Co local activity totals 124,158 in salaries and 11,000 in purchases. Officials discuss federal relief under work relief programs, project sponsorship, and plans for school, county, and city efforts to fund relief work amid colder weather and highway repairs.
Five years after moving to Hover block Mere the Plowman restaurant now stands as a top east Washington eating place. Mr Plowman plans a turkey dinner next Sunday to mark the anniversary with many friends expected. He has run the business seven years in a wooden building beside the Wey store and served over meals. opening day drew many visitors and he hopes to reach half that number for the anniversary.
Bert Plowman asked the city council Tuesday night to license all food service businesses that serve meals on premises to the general public. He argued proceeds would support the library and cited his restaurant's $6,000 annual local spend and eight to twelve staff depending on season.
Charles L. Powell, a write‑in candidate, narrowly defeats incumbent C. L. Holcomb to become city attorney in the election. Powell, not printed on ballots, expresses surprise and gratitude as the Citizen’s ticket secures mayor Alfred Amon’s continued leadership for two years.
Local readers question the Benton county R designation for car licenses while Franklin across the river uses FN. The state assigns letters by county registration totals, increasing letters toward Z and forcing two letter combos for smaller counties like San Juan with ST Ferry FY and Grant GT. Some residents suggest two letters per county to ease identification. Alphabetical testing appears to be the trend.
The city signed a 6000 dollar contract for a new fire engine amid a new 40 mill limit law taking effect at midnight. Pop Keeney’s football Lettermen will attend a Kiwanis sponsored banquet next Thursday night. Awards will be given at the event though letters are not yet received. Capacity is 200. tickets go on sale today. Dinner by the home economics department at the high school gym. C. L. Powell toasts and presents awards. Miss Loretta Griffith spent holidays in Hanford with relatives.
Last year the student body borrowed $10 from 35 local lenders to finance materials for a new athletic playfield. Lenders are being mailed notices that half the principal plus interest is now available at the bank, with repayment to occur this year.
County Health Officer Dr. L. G. Spaulding reports about 600 children vaccinated in schools this week. Cooperation from citizens prevents public meeting bans unless smallpox cases rise, with mild cases often undetected. Quarantine strict in affected homes while water supply tests meet federal standards. Christmas Seals mentioned.
The campaign for membership of the Walla Walla Community Concert Association invites Kennewicke residents to join. Dr. Chester C. Maxey reports the plan operates in over 200 cities with concerts by world famous artists funded by member dues. Only members may attend. no single admissions are sold with a minimum of three major concerts assured each season. Miss Glee Miller is the local representative.
The annual Eastern Star election Tuesday night filled posts for 30 members. Elected were Ella Linn worthy matron J R Ayers worthy patron Catherine Cochran associate matron Floyd Hutchins associate patron Minnie Bird conductress Alice Ayers associate conductress Clarabelle Safford treasurer and Mae Shanafelt secretary. Pearl Wysong retires as worthy matron. Next meeting December 18 will initiate officers. Preparations underway for a Christmas tree gift exchange short program and refreshments.
City council debates extending a side track from Grange oil station across Benton and Washington to the Grape Juice plant area. N P objects while union Pacific supports the project. Council delays decision to next regular meeting as representatives from both roads present arguments.
The Community Chest committee set the annual drive for December 14 and 15 with proceeds supporting the Salvation Army Red Cross Washington Childrens Home Boy Scouts Older Boys conference and Milk Fund. They will again use employer pledge cards to save drive time and expect to raise about 66 cents per capita in Kenne.
A warehouse used by John Ferguson as storage burned Friday afternoon near Vista. Fire was spotted around 1:30 pm outside city limits and could not be fought by local crews until Pasco equipment arrived. The building held 40 to 50 tons of wheat and 1000 orchard heaters and smudge pots along with farm equipment. it cost about $2000 years ago and had partial insurance coverage.
Buy Christmas Scale Scouts will hold a Court of Honor next Wednesday December 12 at Troop 27 meeting hall over the Washington Hardware store. Scout Commissioner Jim Bockius announced at the luncheon of the local scout council at Plowman’s this week. Executive R. H. Hayes of Walla Walla attended and praised council activity.
About eighty five veterans from Benton County attended a deer dinner at Vale grange hall hosted by Robert W. Elypost American Legion Auxiliary. Speakers included George Purdy and Dr Edwin B Newton with Tony Schultz supplying the venison. The event followed a Legion business program and was described as one of the best yet.
Representatives from civic organizations met with County Commissioner Jay Perry to plan relief funding for district projects. A sponsor must provide funds for materials and other expenses while relief funds cover labor. The district's urgent need for a new school building was discussed and a small committee will decide feasibility and report back soon.
