A Washington delegation met with Secretary Work and Dr. Mead urging a $300,000 Columbia Basin irrigation bill. Mead advised delaying any legislation until a joint state and federal commission reports on revenue from power, storage from Lake Pend Oreille, and potential market, suggesting waiting until the next Congress session.
A dozen Kennewick boys will attend the Older Boys Conference in Walla Walla December 10 to 12. L G Bates of the Northwest Council Y M C A lists delegates from area high schools and churches including War nock Carpenter Henke Tullar Brown Siegfried Roy Warnock and Louis Carpenter. The theme centers on daily living and character with the slogan Chart your course then hold true. Speakers of national repute are on the program.
The article notes carpets in the new capitol are designed to improve acoustics. An acoustics engineer dictated carpet depth with a half inch mat beneath and a slightly thicker carpet on top. The intention is to prevent the acoustic issues that plagued the old house.
The annual farm school, covering agriculture and horticulture topics, will run Friday and Saturday, December 10–11, at the Highlands club house. The program features U.S. Department of Agriculture entomologist E. J. Newcomer, Hermiston station head H. K. Dean, Prosser experts, and lectures on codling moth control, soil management, pruning, and spray residue. A Friday night joint feed with the Kennewick Commercial Club is planned.
Dr. J. J. Markey of the Washington Tuberculosis association examined ten people at a chest clinic held Wednesday at the local high school under the anti tuberculosis league. He warns tuberculosis remains a leading killer and urges prevention through early detection and guidance. Free literature on the disease is available from the county nurse’s office. The clinic underscores ongoing public health efforts funded by Christmas seal sales.
Farmers around Kennewick agreed on a five year contract with Pacific Coast Mint Co of Portland. They signed up one carload of mint roots to plant about twenty acres. A governing board of five directors was elected to run the growers association until a permanent board is chosen. The first mint roots arrived about 400 sacks and were planted to obtain two cuttings, with the first distillation planned for July 1 1927 and the second in August.
Mr and Mrs Frank Spofford hosted a family dinner at Thanksgiving with covers for ten. Guests included Dr and Mrs Barton of Yakima. The event also marked a birthday for Mrs Spofford and granddaughter Lenora Sotzen. Paul Siegert and Lenora and Gordon Sotzen joined the group after visiting the Bartons.
The Benton City hotel burned to the ground early Tuesday. Loss estimated at 40000 dollars with about one third insured. The three story plaster and stucco landmark, built by S J Harrison, stood as the town’s largest structure. Fire started on the top floor and spread slowly as Benton City lacked a water system. Prosser fire department could not respond due to no chemical equipment.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Talbot of Spokane and W. E. Thomas of Portland came for J. B. Thomas’s funeral, with Mr. Talbot identified as a cousin of the deceased.
The noted evangelist Billy Sunday drew nearly twelve hundred worshippers to the Kennewick church last Monday night. He preached on First Peter and critiqued liquor, suggesting a dry platform for president, with a lively rapid-fire delivery and vivid illustrations.
The Big Y reports show Jonathan apple pools for August to September with top prices near 2.95 and declines to 1.00 by September 4. Bartlett pear figures remain low but improving, with various grade prices listed. D’Anjou, D’Easter and Winter Nellis in storage for late market.
Miss Gertrude Gage led a Monday basketry class at Mrs. Frank Bentley’s home. Ladies crafted trays and baskets as Miss Olive Howey from W S C demonstrated giftable items in Commercial Club rooms, with many locals in attendance.
Rev. O. McReynolds and his Montana based family arrived to visit their father A. V. McReynolds and have taken rooms at Mrs. Garrett's while planning to make their home in the area.
Mrs. Glenn Higley traveled to Waterville on Thursday due to her father’s illness. Her sister Mrs. Robert McGinnis who had been visiting joined her. Mrs. Higley returned Sunday. her father is no longer in danger.
Jabez B. Thomas long time Kennewick resident died at his home Saturday November 27 after a brief illness from an embolus in the lungs. He came to Kennewick October 1 1911 and contributed to welfare and public works. He held masons and O E S offices and was buried with Masonic honors. Survived by wife Emma a half sister Nelora and brother Guy in Kalispell Montana.
The Christmas seal sale, backed by intensive preparations, launches after Thanksgiving with the Woman's club coordinating county chairmen and school participation. Mail orders are popular. 20,000,000 seals allotted to Washington are distributed, and stock is rapidly depleted. Billboards feature posters and windshield stickers across the state as organizers aim to reach every resident with the seals designed by three minstrels to fight tuberculosis.
J. F. Woodruff, who oversaw grading on River Road, was in town on business Monday and is now engaged at Newport in similar grading work.
Next Tuesday is city election with no contests seen likely to produce little excitement. Polling places in three wards will be open from eight in the morning until eight at night, possibly setting a new record.
Members of the Business Girls club will dine at Hooper's Monday evening December 6 at 6 15. The regular monthly meeting will follow the dinner.
A report states Mr Warnock may run by sticker in the upcoming city attorney race but he says he would not be a candidate under the law and asserts his right to decline the bid.
The Ladies Aid society of the Christian church met with Mrs. F. A. Higley Tuesday for its annual business meeting. Officers elected for the coming year were president Mrs. F. A. Higley, vice president Mrs. Charles , treasurer Mrs. Jesse Vinson, and secretary Mrs. Bert Spurgeon.
The Prosser Community club backs E F Benson’s colonization plan for the Prosser Pasco district with railroads and the federal land bank committing funds. A total of 15000 yearly for two years aims to recruit settlers while local committees from Prosser Kennewick Benton City and Richland prepare to support and monitor progress.
The final jury case of the term was tried Tuesday with a verdict rendered Wednesday at 2 a.m. The suit alleged that the directors of the former Marketing Union of 1921 wrongly paid money recovered to Mrs. H. N. Beal, which belonged to H. Burfiend. Counsel for the plaintiff was Mr. Warnock and for the defendants Mr. Holcomb.
Miss Vera Wright and Ray Cope wed on Thanksgiving evening in a ceremony conducted by Rev. F. N. Morton at the C. E. Copeland home. Attendants were Miss Lela Johnson and William Spofford. The couple, who will reside in Kennewick, are greeted by many friends.
The Womans Circle of the Baptist church holds a missionary program and elects officers this afternoon with Mrs L C Gardner of the Garden Tracts in attendance.
