Desgranges outlines precooling research for asparagus to prevent frost damage and wilt, noting small stalks are most at risk. Experiments show limited air plus direct refrigeration can extend storage, with two weeks feasible to reach market. Local farmer Sellick supplies potatoes and Mallard ducks, adding flavor to the community note.
The group invites musicians who can play the reed instrument or cello to join a new concert orchestra forming for mutual pleasure. Rehearsals occur weekly at the Beste home and are steadily growing in size and ability. A director for the organization is welcome to volunteer.
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Buchanan traveled to Yakima this week due to their daughter Mrs. W. F. Byrd’s illness. Mrs Byrd underwent an operation on Monday and was reported to be faring as well as could be expected.
The Thursday Bridge club met today with Mrs Art Hodge. High score went to Mrs Strickler. The next meeting will be at the home of Mrs Jack Kincaid.
Provisions of Washington state motor code go into effect January 1 1928. The Automobile Club of Washington will cooperate with officials to inform drivers and license official adjusting stations. Rules limit headlights sidelights spotlights fog lights and lamp power and set a certification commission for automotive equipment.
Commercial club annual election drew nine ballots. Both president candidates A. F. Brown and H. G. Fyfe declined, with E. C. Smith sought to continue after D. G. Rodgers. New officers include Lundy vice president Marsh treasurer Durdle agriculture Stram entertainment Crawford transportation Moulton irrigation Morton civic betterment Sprague membership Mackie land settlement Fyfe roads Pennell publicity Vickers tourism.
The petition for a new trial in the Susan murder case, set to be heard in Prosser today, has been postponed to Saturday. The Smith grand larceny case with a retrial motion was also postponed to Saturday.
The Arts and Crafts department hosts its annual Christmas bazaar and cook ed food sale on Saturday December 3 at Hulet's Grocery. Proceeds go to buy books for the library. The ladies offer a range of gift worthy items and are skilled cooks.
M. M. Moulton traveled to Moscow on business and with Mrs. Moulton drove Sunday to visit their daughter Esther who was blocked from returning home for the holidays due to bad road conditions.
The second six weeks honor roll features a three way tie for top junior Beatrice Serier and seniors Joe Siegfried and others with averages around 90s plus a large roster across grades from 1st to 8th. Joe Siegfried leads seniors at 95 percent while Beatrice Serier 97 two others in senior and junior lines also post high marks.
A 1927 Red Cross disaster year is outlined with floods and tornadoes causing immense damage and loss. Local scouts will canvass Kennewick on Saturday to collect membership dollars for relief efforts, with proceeds supporting both local and headquarters relief work.
Mrs W W Bird came back Sunday after a brief visit with her parents in Walla Walla.
A long forgotten Thanksgiving game between Kennewick and Pasco ended in a 6-6 tie. A standout substitute back scored for Pasco on a long interception return to the three yard line. Kennewick held the better stat line with 13 first downs and 203 total yards to Pasco’s 30 and 107. Kennewick remains undefeated in the valley with ties to Sunnyside and Grandview, while Prosser edges both teams as valley champion.
Word comes of the marriage at Hood River last week of Miss Clara Linn and Frank Pierson. Rev. John Linn of Cottage Grove Oregon brother of the bride performed the ceremony. Attended by Mr and Mrs W A Linn parents of the bride they will reside on a ranch near Hood River.
Local football fans organize a December banquet to honor the squad, faculty, and coach with participation from Kiwanis club. E. C. Durdle chairs the Kiwanis committee joined by Mrs. Beste, Mrs. Vickers, and Miss Huntington in arranging the affair.
Ge0 A Peter, with one of the valley’s oldest beds, shares nine years of harvest data from 1918 to 1927. An acre yields about $615 per year on his one and a half acre patch, totaling $8311.15 over the period despite a shortened 1927 season. He notes annual cut length greatly affects output.
The Kennewick Kiwanis club board sets the 1928 officer slate for eight o clock Tuesday evening December 6 at the Commercial club offices. Nominees include Herman Schmidt and Dr L G Spaulding for president, Les Stram and Rev F N Morton for vice president, Ed C Tweet and Harold Fyfe for treasurer, with Mark Moulton and John W Vickers among twelve candidates for seven board seats. The year ends with installation January 6 and plans for a ladies night banquet.
The Joyal English Lutheran congregation invites the public to hear Right Rev. A. E. Moess of Tacoma during a two part visit. He will deliver an illustrated lecture on Christian Education and Philanthropy Saturday at 8 PM and give a Sunday sermon at 11 AM at the Olmsted addition church on Ione Street.
The Woman's club announces a rummage sale this Saturday in the Commercial club rooms. The committee says clothing in good condition for children and adults will be sold cheap, especially overcoats and coats, along with a variety of other articles.
Local Ford dealer Cy Smith shows the new Ford to Mrs. Smith as the maker unveils seven key state sites tomorrow. Dealers who attended Seattle pre show praised the model with features like four wheel brakes, new gearbox, and 40 horsepower engine delivering 20 to 30 mpg. The car differs markedly from the old Model T and aims for 1000 daily production by January.
Leslie Fine manager of the Liberty theatre reports a full house for a Wednesday family night offering admission for 50 cents. He notes Kennewick families average 12 to 15 persons and adds birth control is not among local concerns.
Mrs. E. R. Carnahan entertained Floral culture club members at a one o'clock Monday luncheon. The regular meeting continued in a social vein with ladies sewing on their fancy work.
Postmaster Shanafelt announces the post office department will haul parcel post, seeking bids to establish full delivery service. Readiness is hoped by January 1, with current temporary rural and foot carrier methods replaced.
