British airmen struck Berlin in reprisal for London bombings. The assault lasted nearly three hours with damaging hits in the Nazi heartland. RAF officers claim air efficiency at about five to one in favor of British flyers based on 37,000 bombs dropped by Britain to 7,900 by Germany.
Washington reports Bermuda authorities will grant rights to establish naval and air bases in Great Sound near Hamilton. Senator Barkley plans to push a chain of bases deemed essential to defend the Panama Canal, with locations extending to Caribbean islands and Newfoundland.
The army and navy reject proposals to convert the New York World’s Fair site into a defense cantonent. The 1200 acre area will be landscaped as a public park after the fair ends in October, with the large buildings slated for demolition.

The local Woman's Republican club will hold its first fall meeting in the Methodist church parlors on Wednesday afternoon September 4 at 2 o'clock. Arrangements are being made for a special speaker and anyone interested will be welcome and invited to attend.

Dr. L. V. Backman of Pasco was notified of a Lt. Commander appointment in the navy reserve on Tuesday. He is a candidate for the sixteenth district representative and hopes to serve if elected before active duty. The rank is about equivalent to an army major, according to Dr. Backman.
The second division of the Meth odist aid will meet at the home of Mrs C F Winkenwerder on Thursday September 5. A picnic lunch will be served at one o'clock and each is asked to bring a dish to pass and her own service.
Enrollment across Kennewick public schools remains similar to last year with 383 grade school, 177 junior high, and 203 senior high students registered by Thursday. Some returning residents and families tied to asparagus and strawberry seasons influence numbers while the district keeps the existing schedule, adds advanced mathematics in the senior high, and extends library use instruction in the junior high.
Vehicles driven by Warren Beightol and Lorenz Neuman met head on as Neuman traveled north and Beightol turned left by the Church Grape Juice Co. Both cars received minor damage and no serious injuries were reported.
News of the marriage of Miss Hazel Belle Poynter a former Kenn wick teacher to John Gordon Peterson of Pacific Grove. The ceremony occurred at the First Christian church in Pacific Grove California on July 20. The bride is the daughter of Dr and Mrs John Frank Poynter of Davenport Washington. She is a graduate of Eastern Washington College of Education and the groom from the University of Washington. They reside at 152 Tenth St Pacific Grove.
Weatherman Al Morgan reports a seven day period with weather grades similar to last year. The official seven day totals show stable conditions compared with the prior year.
J K Bockius reports Kiwanis district convention in Spokane drew record attendance and high enthusiasm at Tuesday noon meeting. Dr Wm Stevens states community March of Dimes check of 12 50 will be sent to the orthopedic hospital in Seattle.
Overflow crowd filled the Arrow Grill as Arthur Langlie, Seattle mayor, was honored with a breakfast speech. He spoke at the J. C. Penney corner at nine o clock, impressing Republicans with his cited Seattle figures and sincerity. He continued his campaign into Walla Walla later.
Muldrow says beans escape blight and outlines a plan to plant lima beans next year. Early peas for freezing this season yielded strong pounds per acre, boosting soil fertility with green pea straw. Secretary Wickard announced a federal food stamp plan extension to Kittitas Yakima Grant Klickitat Benton Franklin Walla Walla and Columbia Counties. About 10 000 eligible families may buy Orange Food Order Stamps and Blue Surplus Stamps to lift purchasing power by 50 percent. The Willing Workers Cooking Club placed well at the Benton County Fair with six girls exhibiting one to three articles each. Mrs. 8S. G. Foraker leads the group. The club hosted the Lockstitch Club of Pasco for a Friday evening buffet with twenty members attending.
The Kennewick auxiliary of the Yakima chapter sends the last midsummer Red Cross work shipment to Yakima. It includes six sweaters and four dresses. Local workers listed include Mrs. M. Entertainment and sports include horse racing with Gov. Martin invited to give the principal address, though he may be unable to attend due to his campaign.
