National Canning Contest Opens to All Women and Girls
The first national canning contest offers cash prizes totaling 5825 with a grand sweepstakes of 1000 for the best entry. Open to women and girls in the United States, it features three classes fruit vegetables and meat with top prizes of 250 200 and 100 respectively and 525 among the next 66 winners. Oil plant upgrades add capacity at Continental in Yakima area
Improvements totaling 1000 dollars were completed at the Continental Oil plant under district superintendent Paul Skinner of Yakima. The work includes a new 15000 gallon tank boosting plant capacity to 45000 gallons and upgrades at the service station with two tanks sunk for Conoco Ethyl as the new gasoline offering.

Stores Close for Labor Day Holiday Observance
In accordance with the usual practice all the stores will be closed all day next Monday Labor Day. It is suggested that due precaution be taken by householders to lay in sufficient supply of eatables for the double holiday. There are only five other holidays generally observed by closing in our community.
Baby bass saved and hatchery plan eyed at Yakima mouth
Local Wal tonians saved about six thousand baby bass from ponds by seining near the Yakima river mouth. A plan to build permanent rearing pools at the mouth and stock them with perch and bass fry is under discussion with J P Martin and R L Duston. Duston cautioned the project is ambitious but a single unit may be built this year with potential federal aid.

Pipeline construction from the Benton county gas fields to Sunny Side Grandview Prosser and Mabton started Saturday per R B Newbern of Northwestern Natural Gas Co. Foundations for a Grandview compressor station laid ten carloads of pipe unloaded at Kiowa and Benton City. October 15 is set as probable completion date. The Rattlesnake hill district has 6 producing wells, 5 to be connected, producing 8,000,000 open flow cubic feet daily. Northwestern plans two more wells in 30 days. The gas appears odorless 90 percent methane with double the heating value of ordinary manufactured gas.

Local Gas Development Expands with New Compressors
Three compressors are being installed instead of one along the Kennewick gas line. A ditching machine digs three foot trenches for pipes while five carloads of pipe arrive. Hurst says local gas could reach Prosser by October and other upper valley towns soon after. Drilling plans for several new wells are announced, with further activity expected to trigger a regional boom.
