Campaigns push toward final votes with a $20 prize on Saturday and a promised Chicago World’s Fair trip. Candidates urge supporters to maximize efforts in the remaining two working days before vote tallies drop, stressing time and decisive action as the contest nears closure.
Troop 26 departed Friday afternoon with packs for Sacajeweau Park along the Snake River. W R Wilder, Allen, N L Foraker, and I Shields joined and spent the night at camp. Scouts cooked meals and practiced maneuvers, returning Saturday afternoon.
Miss Verdella Mueller hosts a dinner party at her home on Thursday evening. Guests include out of town Marion and Faye Vincent of Sunnyside.
City budget talks stall as Acting Mayor Emil and others miss meeting. Preliminary budget, beer licensing ordinance, and licensing related readings postponed to a later session while Mayor Amon takes a fishing trip and temporary leadership remains.
The Kennewick Courier-Reporter invites readers to submit the most new subscriptions by 9 p.m. this Saturday August 19 for a $20 cash prize in the subscription drive. The campaign ends September 2 with final prize winners announced by judges.
The NRA education drive is underway led by Gen. Hammer to promote agreement signups. Local signers include Kennewick businesses achieving 100 percent, with plans to modify the blue eagle emblem. Extra staff may earn stars, noncompliant firms receive a wound stripe or cancellation tag, and a consumer-patronage pledge drive will follow with door to door canvassing.
The chamber of commerce will dispatch a committee led by County Commissioner Jay Perry and E. J. Brand to Olympia to press the highway department on finishing the east end of the North Bank highway. Relief needs are highlighted for this fall and winter as no alternative projects exist. President Crawford also urged a report from Trade Day organizers and an invitation to join the Umatilla Cameroan.
Elmer Huppman comes back from harvest and travels to Antone on Wednesday for a short vacation. On Thursday he attends the wedding of a college friend. He will be one of the junior high school teachers this year.
A man going by Willman attempted a store refund scam, claiming returned goods. He succeeded briefly at Neuman’s corner store before being exposed by clerks and followed by Jim Ward. Police arrested him as he admitted the scheme had worked elsewhere and planned more sales.
The Pink and Green cub met on Thursday afternoon with Mrs Carrie Taylor. After the business meeting refreshments were served.
Monday morning M. M. Moulton travels to Washington to press the reclamation service for lower power rates during the development period. He is joined by John Haw of the Northern Pacific agricultural department and supported by Mr. Stapleton. Moulton plans a two week trip with a possible Denver stop on return to discuss with reclamation engineers.
The campaign offers two 25 word classified ad coupons per year with each year of subscription paid. Four coupons worth free advertising are given to subscribers who opt for a two year rate of $3.00. The offer runs until Saturday September 2 and targets reaching over six thousand readers.
The school bell will be heard again on Monday August 28 as Supt Erwin Black returns from Bothell and announces the start date. Teachers list is not yet complete as elections are still being finalized.
A water outage will occur Saturday night to allow weed control in the ditch. Water will return for use by Wednesday morning per Secretary Frank Maupin.
Sidney Cochran formerly of Great Falls Montana starts a new laundry this week in the Brown block room on Washington street the former Wysong hand laundry site. Cochran is an experienced laundry man and is accompanied by Mrs Cochran and their daughter Colin visiting relatives in Hover and Kennewick.
A special committee representing local growers reports satisfactory progress on marketing solutions. The six member panel has met with marketing agencies including Big Y and plans additional talks with Washington Early Crops and Pasco Growers leaders to probe centralizing the marketing end.

The Lampson Bros warehouse under W S Green will manage a cooperative move with C C Smith of Yakima as factor to pack 45 cars of prunes from J I Hill ranch and other contracted fruit this fall. Packing costs are estimated at 38 cents per box with potential refunds if prices fall. First shipments roll by Tuesday night next week with two cars of prunes leading the load.
Eloff Anderson, known as Andy, is spending two weeks away from home on an extended vacation along the Oregon City area and coastal points.
Mr and Mrs W S Curtiss of the Highlands drove to La Grande Oregon Monday to escort their daughter and family home after a week in Kennewick. Mr and Mrs Angel Metsopulos and daughter have just returned from Athens Greece where Mr Metsopulos revisited his boyhood home after 23 years away. They began their journey in June and it took 17 days to travel from New York to Athens.
Mrs. C. F. Winkenwerder served as hostess for a bridge breakfast with two tables in play. Honors went to Mrs. R. E. (full name not provided) for the top honors in the event.
Pasco wins second half by defeating Prosser last Sunday to break a three team tie. Pasco and Kennewick meet in a three game post season series starting Sunday at Pasco field. Manager Ross notes Kennewick’s rest may help them face Pasco, with first pitch at 2 30 p.m.
