Oswald Sika, a horse trader and moonshine operator, was captured in Benton county after deputies found his concealed liquor factory in a wagon by Richland. The setup included raisin mash, boilers, and 200 pounds of raisins, with Sika later located and jailed.
City, ward registration totals show 472 registered this week with 170 in Ward 1 136 in Ward 2 and 86 in Ward 3 leaving an estimated 150 unregistered. Books close August 24 ahead of September 14 primary with registrar hours extended noon to 2 pm and extra Saturday evening openings. Rural voters have registered more promptly. A mass meeting of all land owners in the proposed Kennewick irrigation project is called for Monday evening August 16 at the Highlands club house to discuss the State Reclamation service proposals. Directors and Attorney M M Moulton will explain details and help draft a plan to present the matter officially to landowners. A separate water users meeting in the Valley club house is scheduled the same evening, unlikely to conflict. Fire broke out just before noon last Friday nearly destroying a D. L. Taylor cottage on Fifth Street and the Sowards' household effects. The blaze started from burning sulphur used for fumigating. Taylor plans to rebuild later on the same lot after not restoring the former building. Have You Registered?
Ezra S. Sheldon died at his home on Friday after a 15 year illness including a paralysis two years ago and Brights disease as the immediate cause. He was born July 24 1850 in Minnesota and moved to Washington in 1908. He leaves a widow four sons two daughters and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church with Rev W P Osgood and Rev John A Shaw. Interment at Riverview Heights cemetery with Odd Fellows rites.
Louis Rottman of this city was adjudged insane and committed to the Medical Lake asylum after a Prosser hearing before Court Commissioner Hamilton. He volunteered for admission and trusted his property to attorney F R Jeffrey. He had feared others thought him crazy and avoided restaurants due to imagined scrutiny. He runs a junk trade alongside his harness business. A second item notes Allan B. Dow company from Yakima to give a musical concert in the M E church August 20 hosted by the Ladies Aid society with five musicians of noted ability.
Rainier National Park attracts large summer crowds despite gasoline shortages. Frank A. Jacobs reports record numbers in the park with the Inn in Paradise Valley overwhelmed, turning away up to a thousand visitors daily. He photographs for the park commission and spends time on his fruit ranch. The American Legion plans a coast tour to meet National Commander D Olier with visits to westside posts and a Cascades outing.
Floyd Kelso and S J Coull flew into Walla Walla in a Curtiss seeking a field landing after failing to locate the city airport. A half mile run was needed on heavy wheat stubble to lift off again. Propeller edges dulled, 1300 feet altitude on return. New propeller installed and Kelso later ferried Mechanic Carlson to a crippled harvester near Horse Heaven. Kennewick schools set to open August 30. Superintendent Lynn Smith from Yakima assisting in staff and year plan. A R Gardner editor and Mrs Gardner headed to Yakima for the Washington State Press convention where Gardner serves as president.
A Wenatchee to Portland steamer named Douglas struck a hidden rock in the Columbia River between Rock Island rapids and Priest Rapids, sank within minutes, and was deemed a total loss. Captain Miller steered away but the current drove the stern onto the rock. crew reached shore in a small boat. The vessel, 65 feet long and 100 tons capacity, valued at about $50,000, was built in Wenatchee ten years ago for service to Oroville.
The county primary prospects show three Republican contests and three Democratic filings with no contests. Republican races include sheriff L C Rolph versus Carl Hanson and treasurer George Starr versus Ivan Macey, plus commissioner French against W R Ammon. M M Moulton is the sole representative candidate to date. The Nonpartisan League plans a November third-ticket convention, aiming for a clean test of strength against the old parties. D W Morthland seeks renomination for joint senator on the Republican ticket, with the judicial race set between Judge John Truax and Charlie Johnson.
Everett Republican Elizabeth Jones travels in a self driven Ford on a state tour for state superintendent of public instruction. Since January she has logged over 4000 miles visiting west side counties meeting thousands of voters. Born in Lincoln county Kansas she trained in rural schools and Emporia teacher colleges and later took civil service exams and taught rural, grade, and high school students.
