Britain’s air war shifted to the offense against German concentrations along the English Channel. RAF raids on Wazi held ports damaged dockyards, oil reserves, and rail links, delaying the invasion timetable and signaling a strategic shift in the European theater.
General John J. Pershing urged in a national broadcast that the United States sell fifty overage destroyers to Britain for defense against Germany. Kennewick Valley Telephone Co petitions the city council for a twenty five year franchise as its current permit expires next summer. President A F Brown notes plans for a new building and modern equipment. The ordinance earned first and second readings with final reading set in two weeks. Burns Brown, newly appointed councilman at large, tendered his resignation before the franchise discussion. Brown was appointed by Mayor Crawford to replace Milton Libby.
Miss Evelyn Hoem and Charles Asbury wed at First Baptist Church in Snohomish on Saturday August 4. The Rev Carl E Lucky officiated. Attending Kennewick friends included Rev and Mrs Lucky and local families. Both graduates of the University of Washington, they have taught in Kennewick High School. Asbury will continue teaching this year.
The city council debates an ordinance allowing children to ride bikes on the north side of Kennewick Avenue to reduce traffic danger on Main Street. Current rules ban sidewalk riding. the measure passed first and second readings Tuesday with final reading due in two weeks.
H W Whittemore and family moved into their newly built residence at 1018 Kennewick Avenue early this week. Monday night friends hosted a surprise house warming party. J G Arams of Priest Rapids Development Company visited Walla Walla on Thursday. Mrs George Tilbury Jr of Seattle is visiting her father Louis Petitjean this week.
Three Idaho National Guard companies stopped overnight in Kennewick and camped at the municipal park. They were fed at the park and departed at five in the morning. The visit left no disturbances as crews roamed Pasco also hosts a similar encampment.
Clarence W. Dykes notes about half of Land Bank Commissioner loans in Benton county have been reamortized to extend terms from ten to twenty years. This shifts annual payments to align with farmers earning capacity, easing debt and restoring confidence across many families.
Miss Maxine McClung of Yakima wed John Lincoln on Saturday. The bride is the daughter of Fay and Mrs McClung, formerly of Kennewick, and the groom is F H Lincoln’s son, a Yakima High School graduate of the class of ’36. They plan to live in Yakima where the groom works.
With revived interest in politics, the city will hold primaries on election day and a general election a month later. Many offices are vacant including clerk treasurer and attorney, while mayor and council seats will also be open with multiple ward representatives. Filing costs one dollar and candidates are expected to run.
Sam and Dave Henry and Glen Parker were found guilty in justice court Saturday for petty larceny after entering Rev Williams melon patch and taking 25 melons. Clayton Conley pleaded guilty to stealing old batteries from Texaco and selling them to Pioneer Iron Works, fined $10 and costs. R S Siegler was fined $50 and 15 days jail plus costs for negligent driving, with license suspended 90 days.
Marvin McIntorf was arraigned Friday evening on hit and run driving charges. He pleaded guilty and was fined 100 dollars or 30 days in jail, failing to pay led to immediate imprisonment. Sheriff Richter and Cochran oversaw the arraignment.
Residents of the Olmstead addition presented a petition to the city council Tuesday evening asking that the area be declared a noncommercial zone. The council acted favorably, addressing concerns about undesirable business intrusion.
The Washington Cooperative Egg and Poultry Association will hold its annual picnic on Wednesday August 14 at Grandview municipal park. A full day program runs from morning to evening with Dr. Robert Prior as principal speaker.
Residents along Third Avenue East petitioned the city council on Tuesday evening for a four block extension of the sewer line. The work, if feasible, would be undertaken under the local improvement district plan and city officers were instructed to prepare plans and an estimated cost sheet.
The city with county cooperation will oil surface Railroad Avenue from Benton to Fruitland, finish the short new road north of Fruitland to the state highway, and treat blocks in front of Campbell Cannery, Kennewick Cannery, and along Avenue A to the canal. Auburn Street, First Avenue East past the mayor’s home, and additional sections will receive an oil dust coat. Work starts soon using county equipment.
Benton County farmers face a 10 percent reduction in Agricultural Adjustment Administration payments due to tighter funds and higher participation. Tentative 1940 rates depend on funds and participation, with no change to price adjustment, commodity loans, or crop insurance programs. More farmers may share payments, per Fred Wilson.
Miss Dorothy Doyle and Gerald Britton wed Saturday in Lewiston courthouse. Attendants included W. M. Williams and Gene Britton. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Angus Doyle, worked at the M. and C. Sweet Shop. The groom, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Britton, is a Northern Pacific shop employee in Pasco. Both are Lewiston High School grads, class of 38. They reside at the Matthew apartments on Columbia Avenue.
Mr and Mrs Tom Norwood and their children Jack and Lois Mae from Tacoma visited Mrs Visger in her home along with Mrs P C Doidge and her children Raymond and Jack. The Vale Grange fair will be held at Richland Hall Vale Grange on September 20.
Franklin Benton Klickitat and Skamania counties form the district with one senator and two representatives. Incumbents Moulton and Coe seek re election while Stinson runs again for the senate. Democratic candidates include Moulton, Mrs Broughton and Earl Coe. Dr Gail Bachman enters for the house and Jay Perry runs for county commissioner with W C Muldrow filing this week.
Cars crossed the Columbia River last week on the new highway atop the Grand Coulee Dam marking a notable milestone. Boats are now on the forming lake with excursions from Spokane as a navigation company opens offices to run passenger boats on rising waters toward the Canadian border and Arrow Lakes.
Hulet plans a comeback with a garage based grocery in town. He will operate with no overhead or rent and a delivery only service after a judgment forced the prior store to close.
Civic leaders from four organizations gathered in Coulee to form the Northwest Defense council. The objective is to urge the federal government to complete the Coulee project including diversion works and mining development for national defense. Benton county elects C. L. Powell to the council board with Kennewick reps Frank Mason H. C. Schmidt and W. C. Muldrow.
Mrs. Roy Washburn prizes six to eight envelopes that carried wartorn Europe messages stamped with censor seals. Her prized piece bears a Netherlands stamp with the Nazi censorship emblem, others hail from Tanta Egypt Carpenisi Greece San Sebastian Spain Eire Dublin Nasir Sudan and Iran.
