In Berlin the largest stadium hosted the opening of the Olympiad with about 110000 spectators and 5000 athletes. Hans Woellke won the shot put, claiming the Reich’s first men’s track and field title. Washington reports that Class I railroads increased net operating revenue by over 22 percent in the first six months. June saw rates cut to 2 cents a mile and revenues rose 4.75 percent for the month, more than doubling the half year’s six month average.

In Hidalgo near the Mexican border, bandits halted 12 automobiles while Senator Robert R. Reynolds of North Carolina pursued a historic bid to drive a car on the new Interstate highway into Mexico. The incident netted $400 from the senator as relief.
Miss Alice Braker county health nurse reports expanded program due to Benton County Law Advisory Council led by Mrs Emma Tweet. The group issued state health department recommendations and aided education with 17 civic talks and tuberculosis materials. The Red Cross is forming an Emergency Chest with Mrs H A Linn in charge. County funded hospital care for 132 patients, 35 deaths, immunization drive includes 397 smallpox vaccinations and 287 Mantoux tests. School health inspection covered 2427 pupils with 4914 defects found, 1275 corrected by June. Tuberculosis patients numbered 93 with 9 in sanatorium care and seven deaths.
county auditor Harley Chapman warns rural registration will be about 60 percent of total as primaries approach. The official notice states registration books close Saturday August 22. Voters must register by then to vote, with extra Saturday-night hours planned. city residents with past two years of voting remain registered while those outside city limits must re register under permanent registration.
Several carloads of Kennewick residents traveled to Prosser to hear Frank Weaver deliver the keynote for the Young Republicans league in Spokane this summer. The Benton County Central committee organized the meeting as part of a series leading to the November campaign, promising vigorous rhetoric.
Mrs Urquhart state central committeewoman on the republican ticket was in Kennewick yesterday conferring with Mrs J H Siegfried president of the local Pro America. She announces that John Hamilton republican national campaign manager will speak at the Capitol theatre in Yakima on Saturday afternoon of this week and urges Republicans to make the trip.
A two color neon sign will be hung over the Vibber Gif Ford store tomorrow. Setups for the sign are under way today. The Rex company manufactures ten thousand similar signs for stores nationwide and this installation will enhance the town main street night appearance.
Benton county residents at the Commercial Club meeting protested higher assessed valuations and the state tax commission’s railroad property ratio. They voted to file a protest resolution against 42 percent for railroad property and 50 percent for private property, and invited assessor-treasurer Ben Knox to explain next week. George O. Beardsley led the attack, urging railroad valuations align with other property.

W C Larson Northern Pacific Immigration Agent sold eight farm lots to newcomers and two to locals. Remaining sales were through the local district office to residents adding to holdings. Most sales offered on terms with a 20 percent down payment and up to four years for balance. This supports cash surplus per RFC requirements without raising bond rates.
A crew of 63 workers, including 38 women and 25 men, began the season at Kennewick Canning Co. processing over 10 tons of tomatoes on opening day. Superintendent Alfred Brown notes quality is better than last year and urges growers to leave wormy and green fruit in the field. State Inspector Glenn Wragley says most fruit is near No 1 grade, with many better. some No 2 due to green shows. The cannery will take deliveries daily until frost and accepts tomatoes any time.
