Ships from England bring 372 children fleeing anticipated invasion. J. P. Morgan meets one ship and departs for his Long Island estate with three children of a London partner. Canada lands 2000 more refugees destined for homes for care through the war.
Washington DC reports four fast air patrol units forming the first step in coastal defense. They use U S 4 sound locators praised as more efficient than European equipment for detecting planes far offshore.
Washington reports Congress plans to finish pending defense bills by Sept 1 to empower the War and Navy departments to push the Compulsory Military Training Bill and related measures. Opposition centers on John L. Lewis for his CIO allied groups and the ACLU. Support comes from educators and leading universities backing the defensive program.
President Roosevelt asks Congress for authority to call up the National Guard immediately for at least one year of intensive training under Federal command as a step toward building an army of seasoned soldiers.
London reports RAF planes repelling a Nazi air squadron of about 100 bombers while another British formation attacked German supply depots at Cherbourg France. The strikes sparked enormous fires as vast gasoline stocks were set ablaze in preparation for invasion.
Washington reports a growing wave of opposition to a third term. Senator Burke of Nebraska to seek a Constitutional amendment restricting the presidency to a single six year term. Senator Hold of West Virginia to press a counter declaration against a third term. The 1928 Senate approved a similar idea 56 to 26, but it died in the House.
In New York Harbor the 35 000 ton United liner America with about 900 guests aboard started its first passenger voyage. The ship costs 17 500 000 dollars and is the West's largest merchant vessel. It will operate Caribbean cruises until North Atlantic routes reopen.
The Conference of Pan Foreign Ministers representing 21 American republics backs Secretary Hull. They favor preventing changes of foreign ownership in the Western Hemisphere rather than blanket colonies protection. A committee will refine details as needed.
Paul John Hunt and associates announce a new shallow gas well eleven miles northeast of Prosser on Rattlesnake Ridge southwest slope. Geologist C P Holdredge locates the site for quick access to a potential gas supply, with officials predicting possible gas within six hundred feet and oil deeper. Visitors are invited to inspect the drilling site as crews proceed.
Miss Ava Nolt and Everett E. Eggers wed Friday in a home ceremony at the Nolt residence officiated by Rev. R H Holden. The couple plans a coast honeymoon and will reside in Spokane after a brief wedding trip. Attending were twenty guests and out of town relatives from Lewiston Post Falls Harlem Spokane and other locations.
Telegrams from Senator Schwellenbach and Congressman Hill sparked hope among Yakima valley businessmen farmers and officials after 600 messages and 75 letters urged Washington to start a federal surplus commodities distribution plan in Yakima Benton and Kittitas counties. Leslie V. Morgan said Hill's telegrams promised a surplus commodities representative from San Francisco would contact locals within a month to discuss implementation.
Emma Higley is recovering from slight injuries after a Wednesday automobile crash near Sunnyside. She was traveling with Pasco friends to a Townsend meeting in Yakima when a passing car, unable to see an oncoming vehicle, hit a truck. The car overturned into a ditch. one man suffered fractured ribs while Mrs Higley was briefly unconscious. All occupants were taken to Pasco by ambulance.
White Bluffs Library Benefit Tea hosted by the Library Committee of the White Bluffs Women’s Club at Mrs. E. J. O’Larey’s home next Tuesday August 6 funds new books. Librarian Miss Florence Montgomery has been away in Pullman for a library course, leaving the library closed most days. the event aims to restock with the latest titles upon reopening.

The body of Norman Ray Morton, 20, drowned May 4 in the Columbia River near Attalia, was recovered near White Salmon. Identification came from a belt inscribed with his name. He was the son of E. C. Morton of Attalia and a former Finley resident. Interred in Kennewick.
Nig and Hugh Vandine were arrested and brought to trial in Judge Winkenwerder's court Saturday night. The charge was third degree assault by Lester and Willard Fishback. After evidence was heard the defendants pleaded guilty and were fined $10 and court costs. All four men are Richland residents.
Unemployment benefits paid through the Walla Walla office rose in the first six months of this year compared with 1938. The six month total reached 86 725.51 dollars, up from 42 696.21 dollars. statewide payments for six months totaled 6 013 384.53 dollars, with cumulative state benefits since January 1939 at 12 166 195.64 dollars.
George Foster Jr of Mesa was a four week end visitor of his parents Mr and Mrs George Foster Sr The visit highlighted family time during a quiet weekend in the community.
The Kennewick cannery will open Monday for a test run on tomatoes. After testing new equipment, a full time run is expected with 10 to 12 hours daily production if tonnage lasts. Over fifty acres of tomatoes are contracted and more are being added. about fifty workers may be hired as tonnage justifies.
The 1941 Benton County wheat allotment is 36 088 acres with a 30 percent reduction from the usual acreage, comparable to 1940. Notices will mail to farmers soon, and those seeking new land allotments must request in writing within August 1 to 15. Ray Prater met with Ralph Barber to discuss 1941 program compliance, and a Conservation Office meeting is set for August 3 to train supervisors on new forms as participation rises requiring eight or more supervisors.
Benton County granges plan their annual picnic Sunday August 4 at Prosser park. Morning games include Kennewick High lands vs Kennewick Valley and Buena Vista vs Kiowa Benton, with contests and prizes. Basket dinner at 1 pm, communities to bring dishes. Afternoon program features Harry Cheek state grange secretary as speaker.
The nine members of the Reese family gathered at the home of their mother Mrs. E. F. Reese in the Garden Tracts Sunday for a family reunion. A large family dinner was enjoyed in the afternoon. Those present included Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Reese and daughters Dorothy Ruth Anita and Edith of Concordia Missouri, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Reese and family of Horse Heaven, Mrs. M. A. Foster Gerald and Doris Ann of Hood River, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Reese and family of Horse Heaven, Mr. and Mrs. Karl Reese and daughter Barbara Ann of Hood River, Mr. and Mrs. E. Dammeier Miss Hulda and Minnie and Odto Reese all of Kennewick.
Dr. S. L. Cox of the Washington Tuberculosis Association and county nurse Miss Lois Shumake will hold a chest clinic August 6 and 7 in the county nurse's office at the courthouse in Prosser. Kennewick patients may travel to Prosser by appointment through Mrs. Harry Fleming, executive secretary of the Benton County Tuberculosis League, with no fee due to Christmas seal funding.
Irene Hughes and daughter Iris visit from Spokane as Harrison is accepted for the Flying Corp and departs for San Mario California. Mrs. Hughes and Iris return Friday while word arrives Monday of the assignment. Other local visitors are listed with Walla Walla and Kennewick connections.
The eight mixed doubles pairs played on the local links with Mrs P O Stone and John Heater achieving an 89 1 2 style score in 18 holes. Mrs Steele and John Hull finished as runners up. No next Sunday tournament is scheduled though plans are underway for a two ball foursome for men the following week.
At the H. H. Peters home on the Highlands a family reunion and three birthdays were celebrated. Guests included Lampson and Peters families with out‑of‑town visitors Don Peter and family from Butte Montana Pratter Hogue from Seattle Gene Burton and children from El Paso Texas and Lee Lampson and children from Grand Coulee. Don Peter shared color photos of Yellowstone National Park.
In Kennewick a Democratic political day drew a large street crowd for speeches by Sen C C Dill of Spokane who attacked Gov Martin’s administration and the Ernst welfare department. Roy Misener and Pearl Wanamaker spoke for U S Senate and state superintendent of schools respectively, noting the non partisan ticket for the latter.
Kennewick and Pasco will host a three church Lutheran Mission of Music concert series August 7 to 9 featuring Mr. Orben Sime. The program centers on the Theremin and Fork-cello with pieces from Biblical to modern electronic styles and songs in English, Scandinavian, and German. The events run 8 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Kennewick, First Lutheran Pasco, and First English.
Three Camp Fire Girls Daphne Taylor Patsy Sonnenburg and Maxine Whittemore earned Torch Bearer level honoring in the two weeks at Camp Rogan. Patsy received the Ragananda Trailmaker and nature honors while Maxine earned fagot finder pollywog frog and nature honors. Daphne gained fagot finder pollywog and frog honors as they slept outdoors and cooked meals. Mrs. Beri Wilson and Mrs. H. W. Whittemore accompanied them to Yakima afterward.
Mr and Mrs Asher have bought the Chris Christensen ranch on Benton High lands now held by E J Brand of Kennewick and will move from the Rolf Anderson house next week. Mr and Mrs P H Martina tenants are building east of the T I Evert ranch. Otto Emmer and John Dick of Estopia visited J E Druen in Kiona. Robert Jenkins returns from Pasco hospital where he was treated for injuries from Saturday.
