An annual meeting of the Benton County Tuberculosis League in Prosser reviewed public health progress. Officers were re-elected and Miss Monica Weiber reported on nursing services, school health, goiter prevention, immunizations, and county clinics.
A notice states an office day will bring telephone calls to her in Prosser and invites those wishing to see her to visit her office in the courthouse.
Mrs T B Hopkinson holds her tenth annual pupil recital at the Congregational church on Friday evening April 17 at 8 o clock. The Kennewick class joins Adelaide O'Brien Georgia Nelson and Helen Erickson of Richland. Mrs John Dam offers vocal selections and Margaret Dam recites. Four violin and mandolin pupils from Pasco perform en ensemble. Admission is free and a cordial invitation is extended to all.
W. R. McNulty of Benton City was appointed to the second district county commissioner's unexpired term of Dr. Robert Prior. He qualified and took his seat this week, aiming to ease political dissension and restore harmony. Prior leaves April 20 to become state superintendent of dairies and livestock.
Edward E. Hill urges immediate calyx or first arsenate of lead spray to protect apples. A timely application, a day or two early, is far more effective than late work since a closed calyx cup blocks later sprays and invites worms. Minimum coverage is about ten gallons per tree with high pressure.
The Benton County Minute Women association plans its seventh annual meeting at the Community hall in Benton City on April 24 at 10 30 a m. Officers to be elected include county councillor Mrs S J Harrison vice councillor Mrs E D Minneah and secretary Mrs F S Hedger. Attendees bring a food item for picnic lunch and a short program will follow with open discussion of national topics and social time. Members since organization welcomed even without dues. The gathering aims to foster fellowship and better citizenship while offering comfort to disabled veterans.
The 3 Rivers Growers moved a carload of asparagus daily and with yesterday’s ninth carload their year’s total reached the same level as last year’s carlot business.
The Washington supreme court will rehear the Kennewick Supply & Storage Co. versus O. A. Fry and the American Security Bank at the May term in a case on mortgaging crops for more than one year. En banc session signals a statewide precedent affecting farm product liens. Attorneys C. L. Holcomb for the bank and Moulton & Jeffrey for the Supply Co.
Dr. Robert E. Prior, county commissioner from the second district and Benton City resident, has been appointed state supervisor of dairies and livestock. A Democrat who defeated Sam Allard, Prior has long been involved in regional livestock and racing at the Spokane state fair and is a former veterinarian and Benton City ranch operator. His successor in the district seat has not yet been named.
The local school board elected Principal Hodge as superintendent for the coming year to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Supt. J. W. Failor.
Two auto loads of Moose from the Kennewick order visited Sunnyside lodge last night and reported a splendid evening. Officers were installed, followed by dancing and refreshments. Next Monday the Sunnyside team will host initiation for a class at the Modern Woodman hall.
The Ideal Camp Royal Neighbors honored Miss Ira Campbell who left Wednesday for Prosser. Members met Monday at K P hall for an enjoyable evening of games and music with refreshments. She received a silver thimble for her work during the past.
Mrs. R L Meredith won first place for kitchen improvements in the county contest under extension service. Mrs. L Smith took second and Mrs. W F Ashby won third, with merchants of Kennewick displaying prize kitchen equipment this week.
Herman Schmidt's lofty lead falls as he loses to R. E. Reed 45 to 47. Next six players threaten the top, with a novelty tournament planned by the Courier-Reporter committee for Sunday at nine. Prizes are posted for the contest.
Martha Smalley longtime valley pioneer died Wednesday April 15 at age 73 after a period of illness. She leaves a son William of Kennewick three grandchildren three great grandchildren three sisters and one brother. Born March 22 1852 in Illinois she came to the Kennewick area in 1885. Funeral Friday at 2 PM from the Church of The Nazarene with interment in the local cemetery.
Geo. A. Peters is the town's best cross word puzzler and again wins the Courier-Reporter prize money as the last one left in the miss and out contest. The prize of eight dollars was held at the office until the tie broke and was displayed in nickels in the window for school kids to guess. From now on the puzzle will be run without a prize attached.
The Kennewick Commercial Club pursues county improvement district talks to build a Sunnyside to Priest Rapids road and to secure Wenatchee right of way. Delegations visit Hanford Richland and Sunnyside while highway maps are distributed and a guide sign at Inland Empire and Sunset highways is planned.
The Business Girls plan a spring blossom festival at the Highlands club house this Saturday night to entertain the community and showcase their civic efforts. They decorate the venue, hire the town’s best orchestra, and line up the prettiest girls to greet guests. tickets are available in the advertising columns.
Captain Warde Johnson of Kennewick cites missing regular bats exchange for Swiss cheese bats as the reason for a 6–0 loss to Pasco. None of the runs were earned, and Pasco leads while Kennewick sits bottom.
Invitations are mailed for a Friday night dance honoring the graduating class. The Highlands club house hosts the event on April 24, featuring the seniors and their families.
Mrs Polly Mae McManus mother of Roberta Summers and grandmother of Mrs David McColl died at St Luke's hospital Spokane last Saturday April 11. Her body was taken to Garfield her old home for burial. Mr and Mrs David McColl returned to Yakima where Mrs Summers will join them. Mr and Mrs McColl motored to Spokane and back via Kennewick.
Members of Alma Chapter C E S entertained Pasco and Hanford chapters with a dinner last Thursday evening. Covers for 98 included 35 Pasco guests and 11 from Hanford, served by the Ladies Aid of the M F E church. Afterward at the lodge rooms five candidates were initiated into the order. Mr. and Mrs. W C Muldrow, Mrs. Gus Pearson, Mabel Pearson and Mrs. G A Stradford named among the new members.
Clinton Staser aged 83 died April 8 after a February fall in his daughter's house in Yakima. He broke his hip, surgery not successful, six weeks at St Elizabeth's hospital and later cared for at home with wife Clarissa and seven children. Funeral held in Tacoma with local and Kennewick friends, burial in Tacoma Cemetery.
