Smoot Lake Opens to Auto Access for Valley Residents
Smoot Lake, stocked with trout, becomes accessible to Upper Star Valley residents previously bound to horseback travel. The new road allows Kemmerer Cokeville Montpelier auto trips and enables local farmers to access Douglas fir lodgepole pine and Engelmann timber more easily. Fire protection gains from faster crew deployment and reduced timber loss once fires are spotted.

Stockmen Organize Advisory Boards Under Forest Service
The forest service reports 31 local stockgrowers associations have gained official recognition, bringing total recognized bodies to 118. Advisory boards give four thousand graziers a say in forest administration, reducing misunderstandings and improving range control. Two national groups exist alongside 113 local ones, with boards featuring broad minded, practical members. Secretary Lowell’s recognition of other forest user groups follows this cooperative success.
