Tragic suicide near Sage on Oregon Short Line

William Merriam, foreman of a concrete gang on the Oregon Short Line, walked away from Cokeville toward Sage after a period of heavy drinking. He stepped onto a westbound passenger train as it approached, was struck by the engine, and died instantly. A watch and 34 dollars in silver were found on him before the body was buried at Sage after two days.

An inquest at Cumberland last Saturday on the body of infant Albert Maas found death caused by an overdose of a poisonous drug believed to be laudanum.
