Red Cross History and Origin of the Emblem
A brief history tracing the Red Cross origin from Henry Dunant’s 1859 observations of battlefield suffering to the 1863 Geneva conference, the 9 article treaty, and the adoption of the red cross emblem. Clara Barton helped introduce the movement to the United States, with the first American Red Cross society established in Washington in 1877 and the treaty signed by President Arthur in 1882.
