Thrift Drives Chicago Pupils to Savings Banks
Sixty one savings banks formed in Chicago public schools last year with 13 638 pupils saving 27115 94 dollars. Of this total 11200 90 dollars has been transferred to regular banks. Six pupils in seventh and eighth grades run the banks and deposits start at five cents. When a pupil saves five dollars the amount is moved to a regular bank and an account opened. Rural schools may adopt thrift teaching as a subsidiary course. Deposits could earn three to three and a half percent interest in local savings departments. At twenty five dollars, funds could be used to buy a hundred dollar bond paying four and a half to five percent until paid.
